Description: Sharks center Joe Thornton scored his 10th goal of the season Friday against the Islanders.
Insight: With 10 goals, 55 assists and 95 SOG in 68 games, Thornton is a bit one-dimensional, but he dominates the assist category.

Description: Joe Thornton's new contract extension is for three years and $20.25 million. SOURCE: Pierre LeBrun, ESPN
Insight: Teammate Patrick Marleau signed an almost identical extension earlier today. Though Thornton has only found the back of the net six times this season, he leads the NHL with 47 assists.

10/15/2013 10:53:00 PM
Description: Sharks center Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists Tuesday, giving him one goal and eight points in six games this season.
Insight: Thornton gets most of his points via assist -- he hasn't scored more than 29 goals since 2002-03 -- but he should be among the league leaders in that category.

1/26/2013 6:52:00 PM
Description: Sharks center Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist Saturday against Colorado. Both came on the power play.
Insight: Thornton already has two goals and nine assists through four games. Eight of his 11 points have come with the man advantage.

11/1/2011 9:59:00 PM
Description: Following the Sharks' 5-2 loss to the Rangers on Monday, Joe Thornton said that the Rangers were "probably the softest team we played against" on their road trip. Rangers coach John Tortorella responded accordingly, saying that Thornton is "one of the better players in the league never to win anything." TSN
Insight: It seems ironic that Thornton would make these kinds of comments, considering that he has been labeled a soft player throughout his career for not stepping up his game during the playoffs. Thornton, who has nine points and a +5 in ten games, realized his mistake on Tuesday, saying that "soft" was probably the wrong choice of word.

5/25/2011 1:54:00 AM
Description: According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, both Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe played with shoulder injuries during the playoffs. ESPN
Insight: Thornton played with a separated shoulder in Game 5 after he was hit by Raffi Torres during Game 4. Clowe played with an unspecified shoulder injury during the entire playoffs. Hopefully those who believe that Thornton and the Sharks don't bring it during the playoffs have a newfound appreciation of what it takes to win in the playoffs.

Description: Sharks coach Todd McLellan said that Joe Thornton will play in Game 5 against Vancouver on Tuesday. San Jose Mercury News
Insight: Thornton himself also said he would play, so it seems as if he would have to be bedridden in order to miss this do-or-die game for the Sharks. Keep in mind that he probably won't be 100 percent after leaving Game 4 after taking a Raffi Torres hit.

Description: Joe Thornton left Game 4 against Vancouver on Sunday in the third period after taking a hit from Raffi Torres. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Sharks coach Todd McLellan would not give an update on Thornton after the game. Thornton did not score a point in this game, but he was dominant in the faceoff circle again (11 wins in 17 attempts). Check back for further updates.

5/21/2011 12:18:00 AM
Description: Joe Thornton recorded three assists in the Sharks' 4-3 win over Vancouver in Game 3 on Friday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: With the three helpers, Thornton has taken over the playoff scoring lead with 17 points (3g-14a). He seems to be winning the matchup battle with Ryan Kesler, as he has six points (1g-5a) in three games against the Canucks. His numbers and hustle this season should make believers out of those who think that he is not a playoff performer.

5/15/2011 11:23:00 PM
Description: Joe Thornton scored a goal and added an assist in the Sharks' 3-2 loss to Vancouver in Game 1 on Sunday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Thornton was also effective in the faceoff circle, winning 10 of 15 draws in this game. He appeared to be fired up right from the opening faceoff, where he was actually waived out of the faceoff circle. Thornton's goal was the first of the game, when he took full advantage of a failed Roberto Luongo clearing attempt late in the first period.

5/5/2011 12:09:00 AM
Description: Joe Thornton recorded three assists in the Sharks' 4-3 overtime win over Detroit in Game 3 on Wednesday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Thornton assisted on all three of Devin Setoguchi's goals, although Setoguchi's value improves more with Thornton centering him than the other way around. Thornton has a reputation for disappearing during the playoffs, but this season he has come through with nine points (2g-7a) in nine playoff games. Don't be afraid to add him in your playoff pool.

4/26/2011 12:53:00 AM
Description: Joe Thornton scored the game-winning goal in overtime and added an assist in the Sharks' 4-3 win over Los Angeles in Game 6 on Monday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: The Sharks had just finished off killing a five-minute charging penalty by Jamie McGinn from late in the third period when Thornton scored. The Sharks are the third Western Conference team to move to the second round, joining Detroit and Nashville. Thornton, who is not known as a playoff performer, posted five points (2g-3a) in the six-game series.

3/16/2011 12:41:00 AM
Description: Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley each scored two goals in the Sharks' 6-3 win over Dallas on Tuesday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Both Thornton's and Heatley's second goals were empty netters. Heatley has 24 goals this season, while Thornton has 19.

2/2/2011 12:05:00 PM
Description: Thornton backhanded an empty-net goal Tuesday night for his first score in four games.
Insight: The veteran center has been a bit streaky recently. The recent three-game drought followed a three-game goal streak. Before that, a six-game goal drought was preceded by three goals in four games. That seems to make him at least worth watching over the next few games. Thornton has 14 goals for the season. (RapidDraft.com)

1/10/2011 3:02:00 PM
Description: Thornton has now gone five games without a point, after being held scoreless in Sunday's shutout loss to Anaheim.
Insight: He had three goals and seven points in the five games before that, so let's not worry too much about Thornton. That said, his fantasy owners and his rela team really need the center to get going. (RapidDraft.com)

12/24/2010 9:02:00 AM
Description: Thornton scored a goal and added two assist on Thursday night against Phoenix.
Insight: Thornton has four points in his last two games to give him eight goals and 24 assists on the year. (RapidDraft.com)

11/28/2010 9:00:00 AM
Description: Thornton picked up two assists on Saturday against the Oilers.

Insight: Thornton has three assists over his last two games to give him 20 points in 19 games so far this year. (RapidDraft.com)

11/12/2010 10:05:00 AM
Description: Thornton returned Thursday night after serving a two-game suspension for an illegal hit, but he was unable to notch a point for the third straight time.
Insight: Thornton tallied eight points in the two games prior to this recent drought, so it's only a matter of time before he gets back on the board. (RapidDraft.com)

11/11/2010 1:19:00 PM
Description: Joe Thornton will return to the Sharks' lineup on Thursday after serving his two-game suspension. TSN
Insight: Just a friendly reminder to get Jumbo Joe back into your lineup.
