Senators, Karlsson agree to 7-year extension
Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators and defenseman Erik Karlsson have agreed to terms on a seven-year contract extension.
The 22-year-old Swede enjoyed a breakout season last year, setting franchise single-season records for assists (59) and points (78), while tying the mark for goals (19).
"We are extremely pleased to announce that Erik Karlsson's contract has been extended for seven more years," said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk in a Tuesday statement announcing the deal.
"Erik is the type of player and person that embodies an Ottawa Senator, and we are confident that on a personal basis, he will quickly become a role model for many of our young Sens fans and a great contributor to our community. We feel strongly that this long-term commitment will be great for both sides. As one of the cornerstones of our franchise, Erik will be a large part of the future success that Senators fans can look forward to."
Ottawa's first-round pick in 2008, Karlsson has totaled 37 goals and 149 points with a minus-19 rating in 216 contests over his three-year NHL career.
Karlsson is one of three finalists for the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman, along with former Senator and current Boston captain Zdeno Chara. Shea Weber of Nashville completes the trifecta.
