Description: Ronnie Hillman started Denver's preseason opener Thursday night against Seattle ahead of C.J. Anderson.
Insight: Montee Ball could miss the entire preseason while recovering from an appendectomy. He's in no danger of losing the starting job, but Hillman could cement himself as the top backup, particularly after Anderson suffered a concussion Thursday night.

Description: Ronnie Hillman will start Denver's preseason opener Thursday night against Seattle.
Insight: Montee Ball may miss the entire preseason while recovering from an appendectomy. He's in no danger of losing the starting job, but Hillman could cement himself as the top backup.

Description: According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Ronnie Hillman will not dress for the Broncos in Week 8 versus the Redskins.
Insight: Hillman's fourth-quarter fumble at the 2-yard line Sunday against the Colts put a stop to Denver's comeback attempt. The team will go with rookie Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson as backups to Knowshon Moreno, making Ball one of the top handcuffs in fantasy.

Description: Though currently listed as Denver's starting running back, Ronnie Hillman may not get a majority of the work in Week 1, according to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.
Insight: The reasoning is that the Ravens' pass rush with Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil will force the Broncos to use their best pass blocker who is thought to be Knowshon Moreno. The Denver running back situation is clouded with three backs expected to share time - Hillman, Montee Ball and Moreno. Fantasy owners will have to stay away until it becomes more clear.

Description: According to Ian Rapoport of, the Broncos plan to use a running back committtee on a drive-by-drive basis rather than a play-by-play so the team can use its up-tempo approach.
Insight: The key word here is committee, regardless of whether they plan to keep one running back on the field for an entire drive or not. Ronnie Hillman, Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno should be owned but kept out of fantasy lineups early this season.

Description: According to Gregg Rosenthal of, the Broncos announced that Ronnie Hillman will start at running back in Week 1.
Insight: Hillman took most of the first-team reps in training camp but fumbled three times this preseason. Denver will use a committee of Hillman, rookie Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno. Ball has the highest upside long term.

Description: According to the Denver Post, Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman returned to the first team during Tuesday's practice.
Insight: Back and forth we go. Rookie Montee Ball received first-team reps for the first time all camp Monday after Hillman fumbled for the third time this preseason Saturday. Ball, Hillman and Knowshon Moreno figure to all be in the mix for playing time in Denver early this season, which means none of them will have fantasy value early on. If you're looking for a long-term move, Ball is likely the guy who will lead the committee.

Description: Jeff Legwold of says that "every indication on the practice field -- as in EVERY indication -- is that Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball are going to share the workload in a variety of down-and-distance situations," with Knowshon Moreno and Jacob Hester being worked in on third downs.
Insight: The high-powered Broncos still found time to run the football 481 times last season, ninth most in the NFL, so a split workload between Hillman and Ball could yield some positive fantasy results for both players. However, those drafting Ball at his current ADP of 44.9 ( are sure to be disappointed. Hillman's ADP is 88.3. We could see a situation similar to the Colts in 2006, when Joseph Addai received 226 carries and 40 receptions and Dominic Rhodes ran 187 times and caught 36 passes.

Description: According to the Denver Post, Ronnie Hillman is still considered the starting running back after three padded practices.
Insight: The team expects Montee Ball, a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, to eventually be the feature back, but Hillman is getting the first-team reps due to his improvements in pass protection from last season. As a rookie, Hillman struggled with that aspect of the game and was passed over by Knowshon Moreno when Willis McGahee went down with an injury. Fantasy owners should probably back off that early fourth round ADP on Ball.

Description: Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman will open training camp as the starter, according to the Denver Post. Rookie second-rounder Montee Ball will start out as the third-down option and rotation runner on early downs.
Insight: Hillman, who rushed for 330 yards on 85 carries (3.9 ypc) in 14 games as a rookie last season, had trouble cracking the running back rotation due to pass-blocking issues. We expect Ball to be the starter, but he might be held back by the same issues. Ball is currently being drafted at an ADP of 38.9 in mocks, while Hillman is going at 132.3.
1/12/2013 10:04:00 PM
Description: Denver rookie running back Ronnie Hillman had to take over for Knowshon Moreno after the latter hurt his knee Saturday in the divisional round against the Ravens. Hillman was up to the challenge and finished with 83 yards on 22 carries.
Insight: It was Moreno, not Hillman, who replaced Willis McGahee during the season when McGahee tore his MCL, but the rookie finally got his chance to make an impact Saturday. Denver lost so fantasy owners won't have to sort out Denver's running back situation next week, when McGahee is first eligible to return from injured reserve.
10/16/2012 1:45:00 PM
Description: Denver rookie running back Ronnie Hillman was shown a lot of confidence by the Broncos coaching staff on Monday night. He was the primary backup for Willis McGahee and played in third-and-long blitzing situations.
Insight: Coach John Fox doesn't have a history of using rookie running backs so the fact that Hillman is ahead of Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball just six games into the season says a lot. McGahee is still the lead back, but Hillman's fantasy value is headed in the right direction.
9/11/2012 1:31:00 PM
Description: Denver rookie running back Ronnie Hillman was inactive for the season opener. "It was a combination of both (physical and mental) when you're a rookie," coach John Fox told the Denver Post. "Right now, physically he's better, but he missed a lot of time.
Insight: Fox doesn't have a history of using rookie running backs and add in the lost reps due to injury and you have a severly limited opportunity. Knowshon Moreno was the backup to Willis McGahee in Week 1 and likely will continue until the team is sure Hillman won't let his quarterback get killed by a blitzing linebacker.
8/2/2012 1:46:00 PM
Description: Denver rookie running back Ronnie Hillman left Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury according to a report.
Insight: A rookie back has a hard enough time getting playing time from coach John Fox, so anything that robs him of reps hurts his chances to be the No.2 option in the Broncos backfield. Willis Mcgahee isn't a young chicken and Knowshon Moreno has proven more bust than player, so Hillman is probably the long-term answer, but may not help your fantasy roster much this season.
6/27/2012 12:13:00 PM
Description: Denver rookie running back Ronnie Hillman may be the most talented running back in the Broncos camp, but that doesn't mean he'll be a starter anytime soon. Coach John Fox has always refrained from using rookies in major roles.
Insight: With McGahee's age and mileage and Knowshon Moreno's status as a bust, Hillman is probably the future for the Denver running game. Still, barring an early season injury, he may not have starter fantasy value until the second half of the season or 2013.
