Insight: The highly-touted 22-year-old rookie batted .239 with three homers and 22 RBI in 234 at-bats.

Description: Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras admitted Tuesday that he has "gained a few pounds" according to MLBlogs.com.
Insight: Sources have speculated Taveras has gained close to 20 pounds since undergoing ankle surgery last August. General manager John Mozeliak said he hopes the fact Taveras is not starting in the playoffs is a wake up call for him. The team plans to give the outfielder a conditioning plan for the offseason.

Insight: Taveras is just 1-for-12 over the past four games and can probably use the rest. He hasn't even come close to living up to his billing as one of the top prospects in baseball, but he's still just 22 and less than 200 at-bats into his big league career.

Insight: Taveras is just 2-for-21 over the past six games and will get a second consecutive night off. The 22-year-old hit .320 with an .892 OPS in the minors, but is batting .206 with a .530 OPS in his first 141 major league at-bats. Long-term he's the Cardinals right field answer, but with them fighting for the playoff they need to put their best current lineup on the field.

The Cardinals haven't gotten much production out of their outfield -- Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, Peter Bourjos and Jon Jay have combined to bat .261 with 11 home runs in 632 at-bats. Plus, Matt Adams has struggled against lefties this and Allen Craig hasn't hit righties well. Taveras' promotion will give St. Louis more options.
