Eskimos name Chris Jones head coach

Edmonton, AB ( - The Edmonton Eskimos have named Chris Jones their new head coach.

Jones spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator, assistant head coach and assistant general manager of the Toronto Argonauts. He helped the Argos to a Grey Cup championship in 2012.

"Chris Jones has paid his dues in the Canadian Football League and has earned this opportunity," said Eskimos general manager Ed Hervey in a statement Wednesday. "His commitment to the league and record of success is impressive. I look forward to working with him."

Jones has also been an assistant in the CFL with Montreal and Calgary. He was a defensive line coach and defensive coordinator with the Alouettes from 2002-07, then spent four seasons in a similar position with the Stampeders before moving to Toronto.

Prior to his CFL career, Jones worked in the collegiate ranks with Tennessee Tech, Alabama and Tennessee-Martin.

The Eskimos needed a replacement for Kavis Reed, who was fired after a 4-14 season in 2013. Reed had a 22-32 mark during his three-year stint in Edmonton.
