NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at New Jersey
(Saturday, November 30th)
Final Score: New Jersey 1, Buffalo 0 (OT)
Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Steve Bernier scored the game winner with 40.2 seconds left in overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday at Prudential Center.
Late in the extra session, Buffalo turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Bernier weaved into the offensive zone and stopped on a dime near the top of the left circle before rifling a wrister past the glove-side of Jhonas Enroth to send the Devils to their second straight victory.
"You never know what can happen when you shoot the puck," Bernier said. "That's exactly what I tried, and I scored. It's nice for sure."
Cory Schneider stopped all 15 shots he faced to notch his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career.
Enroth saved 23 shots in defeat for the Sabres, who have lost six of their last seven games.
"It wasn't the most exciting hockey game, but when you come on the road, that's what you want to do and overall, I like the way we competed from the second period on," Sabres interim coach Ted Nolan said.
After managing just three shots in the opening frame, Buffalo had a prime chance to jump in front in the second thanks to three New Jersey penalties, but the Sabres failed to capitalize on the opportunities and the teams headed for the final frame stuck in a scoreless deadlock.
The Devils dominated the third, outshooting the Sabres 8-3, but couldn't solve Enroth to send the game beyond regulation.
Buffalo's Brian Flynn was whistled for hooking at 4:57 of the third for his first NHL penalty in his 53rd career game, setting a Buffalo record for most games without a penalty to start a career ... New Jersey's Ryan Carter left the game in the first period due to lacerations and did not return ... Devils defenseman Andy Greene assisted on Bernier's goal to extend his point streak to five games.
