Description: According to Brian McTaggart of mlb.com, Astros reliever Jesse Crain has bursitis in his elbow and is out indefinitely.
Insight: Crain had biceps surgery last October and was expected to return in early May, but that timeline is no longer applicable. He'll be shut down from throwing for 7-10 days. The Astros will continue to use a committee of Josh Fields, Anthony Bass and Chad Qualls at closer.

Description: According to the Houston Chronicle, Astros reliever Jesse Crain (shoulder) thinks early May is a realistic goal for his return to the majors.
Insight: Crain experienced shoulder soreness following his first bullpen session late last week. He had biceps surgery last October. The 32-year-old could take over the closer role (currently a committee) once he's healthy.

Insight: Crain and Chad Qualls were expected to battle for the closer's role for Houston, but it appears that Qualls will get the first shot by default.

Insight: Crain was acquired by the Rays at the trade deadline but never ended up pitching for them because of a shoulder issue. Crain's 0.74 ERA in 36 2/3 innings last season was a career-best.

Insight: It would be nice to have Crain's arm in the bullpen, what with his 0.74 ERA and 1.145 WHIP, but it doesn't appear that it will happen.

Insight: He wasn't asked to pitch in Monday's game against the Orioles. Certainly the Rays would like to see him pitch a couple times before deciding on their postseason roster. Of course, they still have to make the postseason first (their magic number is five).

Insight: Shoulder issues have kept him off the field for almost three months. Crain has actually never pitched for the Rays as he was acquired from the White Sox at this year's trade deadline.

Insight: Crain (2-3, 0.74 ERA), who was traded from the White Sox before the trade deadline, hasn't pitched since June because of a shoulder injury. When he does return, he should be a valuable arm out of the pen.

Insight: Given his 0.74 ERA and 1.145 WHIP statistics he's a solid setup man, but has limited fantasy value because he doesn't figure to close. He should be ready to go by the end of the month.

Insight: Who wouldn't want a guy with an 0.53 ERA and a .195 average against in 35 relief appearances? The Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers, three teams with well-documented closer issues, are all said to be interested.
