Thomas earns top fantasy goalie honors

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was the first goaltender off the board in most fantasy drafts last fall and he lived up to all expectations with stellar numbers across the entire boxscore.

Thomas, who finished second to Niklas Backstrom in 2009-10 fantasy rankings, took the final step this season with 35 wins, a 2.00 GAA, a 0.938 save- percentage and nine shutouts.

Thomas edged out Vancouver's Roberto Luongo for the top spot.

While Thomas won the overall prize, the "Best Bargain Award" goes to Chicago's Corey Crawford who took over the Blackhawks goaltending job from veteran Marty Turco who had all sorts of trouble at the beginning of the season. Turco played just six games after January 1st as Crawford, an end-of-the-seventh round selection, posted 33 wins in 57 games.

Crawford beat out Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who was a free agent pickup in most leagues. Bobrovsky earned 28 wins, with a 2.59 GAA and a 0.915 save-percentage while sharing time with Brian Boucher.

The "Most Disappointing Award" goes to future Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur. Brodeur could only manage 23 wins with a 2.45 GAA and a 0.903 save- percentage. It was his lowest win total in any full season since 1994-95. Some of the blame must go to the offense which finished 30th out of 30 teams and put extra pressure at the defensive end of the ice. Brodeur lost eight games in which he gave up two goals or less.
