Description: 49ers running back Frank Gore is expected to play on Saturday against the Chargers according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Insight: Gore practiced limitedly due to a concussion this week, but doctors have cleared him to play. Backup running back Carlos Hyde is out, so Gore might actually play a lot. He should be started in most situations.
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (hand) will make the decision to play or sit, according to Adam Schefter.
Insight: If that's the deciding factor, you can expect Murray to play. That also means you have to start him, given he's been the best running back in the league all season, and hope he gives you a full 60 minutes.
Description: Eagles running back LeSean McCoy admitted to CSN Philadelphia that backup running back Chris Polk is taking over as the team's goal-line runner.
Insight: Polk played just three snaps versus the Cowboys in Week 15, but he scored on two of them. Another goal-line carry went to Darren Sproles who scored. McCoy will continue to lead the team in rushing, but the emergence of Polk and the addition of Sproles as significantly hurt McCoy's value.
Description: 49ers rookie running back Carlos Hyde told CSN Bay Area that he recieved good news on his MRI but is still not expected to play on Saturday.
Insight: Not only did Hyde say he is not expected to play, he flat out stated he would need a miracle to suit up. The timing couldn't have been worse as Frank Gore is doubtful because of his concussion. Alfonso Smith or Phillip Tanner could be the starting running back on Saturday versus the Chargers.
Description: Ravens tailback Lorenzo Taliaferro, inactive for Week 15 against the Jaguars, has now been placed on the injured reserve list thereby ending his season.
Insight: Taliaferro made a little noise back in Week 3 when he rushed 18 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, but since Week 5 has given the Ravens and fantasy owners very little as Justin Forsett grabbed the workhorse role.
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray underwent surgery on Monday to repair a broken band in his left hand, but the feeling in Dallas is he can play in Week 16, according to an Ed Werder report.
Insight: Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar would likely form a committee if Murray is unable to play against the Colts, but obviously neither would produce at Murray's level.
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray underwent surgery on Monday to repair a broken band in his left hand.
Insight: Wow. This seemingly came out of nowhere, however Murray's status is still unknown for the Week 16. The injury is being reported as minor, and may he may only need to miss one game, if any. Yet, this is not what owners want to hear heading into the Championship round. Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar would likely form a committee if Murray is unable to play against the Colts.
Description: Jets running back Chris Johnson rushed for a team-high 55 yards.
Insight: Johnson has been getting the work in the past three games, but hasn't produced big numbers. Ivory rushed 12 times for 25 yards and a touchdown, Johnson rushed 10 times for 55 yards and neither guy holds great upside right now with this 50-50 split of the workload.
Description: Vikings running back Matt Asiata led the team with 11 carries for 36 yards in Week 15.
Insight: At least he found the end zone and caught seven balls for 50 yards to crack into double-digit fantasy points. Asiata is a low end value only because Jerick McKinnon is done for the season. We don't expect him to be a viable fantasy option in 2015.
Description: Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch rushed 21 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: The 49ers defense played well, particularly in the first half, but Lynch still managed to help fantasy owners. It will be a tough game again in Week 16 against an Arizona Cardinals defense that is No. 6 against the run and has yielded just six rushing touchdowns this season.
Description: Eagles backup running back Chris Polk appears to be the goal line back.
Insight: Polk scored twice inside the 5-yard line. He's not going to get any significant yards based on current usage, but he could be a consistent touchdown maker. At the moment he's just a pain in the side of LeSean McCoy owners.
Description: Patriots running back Jonas Gray is apparently out of the doghouse.
Insight: Gray led the team with 11 carries versus the Dolphins and gained a team-high 62 yards. LeGarrette Blount and Shane Vereen, however, scored the rushing touchdowns, so the Patriots backfield remains a mystery.
Description: Running back LeGarrette Blount gave way to Jonas Gray a bit in Week 15, but Blount did score a touchdown.
Insight: Blount had just eight carries and 17 yards while only supplying seven more yards receiving, but he avoided the fantasy dud finding the end zone on the goal line. Blount, along with every other Patriots running back, has risk invovled every week because owners just don't know who will get the ball.
Description: Chiefs running back Knile Davis remains fantasy relevant.
Insight: Davis has remained relevant in fantasy because of his big play ability. Davis can make noise on special teams and on Sunday, he made a big splash in the passing game. Davis caught one pass for a 70-yard touchdown.
Description: Raiders running back Latavius Murray continues to be a decent fantasy play.
Insight: That's saying a lot considering he plays for the Raiders. Murray had 12 carries for 59 yards and 17 more yards receiving. Murray is a FLEX option just based on the fact he should get lots of carries, though, when Oakland falls behind, there's always a chance Derek Carr gets more than 50 pass attempts.
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had a disappointing day for his standards, rushing for 12 carries for 52 yards versus the Raiders.
Insight: Not a good time for him to lay an egg. The Raiders were able to slow him down, and then with a big lead, Andy Reid didn't use him much late in the game. Charles will be a RB1 again next week against the Steelers.
Description: Colts running back Trent Richardson should probably not be in fantasy starting lineups anymore.
Insight: Richardson has been given every opportunity to prove he can be "the guy" in Indianapolis, but now he is losing playing time to Daniel Herron. Richardson had 32 yards on nine carries while Herron gained 60 yards on 11 attempts. Sit Richardson if you haven't already.
Description: Texans running back Alfred Blue had eight carries for 26 yards versus the Colts.
Insight: After Ryan Fitzpatrick left the game, Houston ran the ball a lot. With backup quarterback Tom Savage also hurt, there is a big question mark at quarterback, which means even with Arian Foster healthy, Blue could get more work.
Description: Texans running back Arian Foster just missed the 100-yard rushing bonus versus the Colts.
Insight: Foster had 99 rushing yards on 26 carries. He had plenty of opportunities with starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick leaving the game with a leg injury. Foster is still a RB1 no matter who plays quarterback for Houston.
Description: Colts running back Dan Herron had another decent day at the office.
Insight: Herron rushed for 60 yards on 11 carries as he again outproduced the former first-round pick Trent Richardson. Herron added two catches and 12 yards in the passing game. He is a decent FLEX play moving forward.
Description: Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart was sort of the workhorse back for Jacksonville versus the Ravens on Sunday.
Insight: We sort of give him the workhorse label because he did lead the team in carries, doubling every other Jaguar running back, but he still had just 13 carries and 54 yards. If owners have to go with someone in the Jacksonville backfield, Gerhart is the guy.
Description: Packers running back Eddie Lacy was awesome again and should have received more opportunities against the Bills.
Insight: Lacy had 15 carries and gained 97 yards with a touchdown. He, however, had five of those carries on one drive which ended with his score, the only touchdown for the Packers on the day. The only reason we can think of as to why Lacy did not get more work is that he was hurt, which is a possibility since he came into the week with a hip injury.
Description: Bengals running back Giovani Bernard was fantasy relevant in garbage time in Week 15.
Insight: Bernard had 79 yards on 15 carries and gained 24 more yards on three catches, but nearly all of that came in the second half with Cincinnati ahead by more than 20. Owners shouldn't count on Bernard repeating that performance versus the tough Broncos next week.
Description: Browns running back Isaiah Crowell may have hit the rookie wall.
Insight: Crowell hasn't rushed for over 60 yards since Week 12 and has just two games with over a 4.0 yards per carry average since Week 5. Against the Bengals in Week 15, Crowell gained 17 yards on seven carries.
Description: Bengals running back Jeremy Hill has seized his opportunity to be the Bengals starter.
Insight: Hill led Cincinnati with 25 carries and 148 yards with two touchdowns on Sunday. The Bengals ripped apart the Browns run defense for 244 yards on the ground. Hill is a low-end RB1 moving forward.
Description: Falcons running back Steven Jackson had an alright fantasy day with 11 carries and 46 yards.
Insight: Atlanta turned to Matt Ryan and the passing game as they trailed the Steelers, 20-7, at halftime. Jackson had a decent average, but without a touchdown, he didn't help many owners advance to the championship.
Description: Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell used all his skills to put up another great fantasy day.
Insight: Bell only averaged 2.4 yards per carry but still managed 119 total yards as he gained 72 yards on five catches. Bell also had two rushing touchdowns. He also broke the Steelers single-season record for total yards on offense.
Description: Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart should see the bulk of the carries with Denard Robinson out for the season.
Insight: If owners really need running back help, Gerhart should touch the ball the most of all the Jaguars runners in Week 15. That isn't saying much, though, and Gerhart should only be used in emergencies against the tough Ravens.
Description: Giants coach Tom Coughlin hinted that the team could use the "hot-hand" approach at running back.
Insight: Espn's Dan Graziano also stated that Rashad Jennings could be in line for another reduced workload in Week 15. With all this being said, we like Andre Williams a little more this week against Washington. However, owners beware that the Redskins have actually been solid versus the run.
Description: Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries and caught two balls for 11 yards.
Insight: Williams rushed 19 times for 100 yards in Week 14, surprising the Chiefs and fantasy owners alike. He ran well Thursday night, given the lack of a passing threat. Unfortunately, that's likely to continue to be a problem the remainder of the season unless Brett Favre comes out of retirement.
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver could see extended playing time on Sunday.
Insight: Ryan Mathews has missed two consecutive practices with an ankle injury, and with his status in doubt, both Oliver and Donald Brown could be thrust into action. Oliver rused for over 100 yards in both Week 3 and Week 4, and was heavily involved in the passing game during Mathews' absence earlier this season. However, with all that being said, we would recommend Oliver as no more than a flex play if Mathews sits.
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.
Insight: This is the second straight practice Mathews has missed, leaving his availibilty in extreme question for Week 15. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown would see a bump in value, with Oliver being the slightly more preferred player.
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.
Insight: He injured his right ankle during the first half of Week 14. He had only two carries during the second half, and his status is now in question for Sunday. Branden Oliver will see an increase in snaps if Mathews sits.
Description: Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson expressed the feeling he would like to move more towards having one featured back rather than split them between Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard.
Insight: That likely means good things for Hill and bad news for Bernard. Bernard owners could see the writing on the wall the past couple weeks though. He has averaged a meager 3.18 yards per attempt since returning from his hip injury while Hill ran for over 150 yards in a game twice while Bernard was hurt. Bernard should not be in many lineups this weekend for the fantasy playoffs.
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles missed practice on Wednesday, but fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned.
Insight: Coach Andy Reid said this week that Charles is dealing with knee and ankle soreness. He didn't, however, show much concern. Charles should be ready to go this week for fantasy owners in the playoffs.
Description: Packers coach Mike McCarthy is not overly concerned with running back Eddie Lacy's bruised hip according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Insight: Lacy left Monday night's game early as James Starks took over the running duties. McCarthy likely removed Lacy as a precaution, but it is a little concerning for fantasy owners because of the short week. Stay tuned, but we expect Lacy to play versus the Bills in Week 15 and be a solid RB1.
Description: Packers running back Eddie Lacy injured his hip and couldn't finish the Monday night game.
Insight: Now we understand why James Starks saw so much work. He said he thinks he'll be able to play Sunday, but it's worth watching as he's on a short recovery week. He's been an RB1 for most of the second half of 2014.
Description: Packers running back James Starks ran for 75 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries and combined for 101 yards from scrimmage.
Insight: Starks saw almost as much work as starter Eddie Lacy and posted excellent fantasy numbers for a backup. It was his best game of the season, but there is no guarantee that this level of work and production will continue.
Description: Just up from the practice squad, Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams surprised the Chiefs and fantasy owners by dominating the Cardinals running game.
Insight: Who? This came out of nowhere. Williams rushed 19 times for 100 yards. He's not versatile like Andre Ellington, but he was certainly a better option than Stepfan Taylor or Marion Grice. he should be very popular on the waiver wire.
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles injured his foot on a run in the first quarter, but returned and posted solid fantasy numbers.
Insight: Charles rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown and caught two balls for 20 yards and a second score in just a dozen touches. Hopefully the foot won't get worse over the next week of practice because he has a nice matchup with Oakland in Week 15.
Description: Broncos running back C.J. Anderson didn't post the big yardage total this weekend, but scored three times.
Insight: Anderson was noticably limping, but still gave fantasy owners a nice point total. He's averaging 27 rushing attempts over the past three games and has turned Peyton Manning into a game manager.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson was a busy guy Sunday, rushing eight times for 35 yards and catching 10 of 14 targets for 37 yards.
Insight: Jackson appears to have reasserted himself as the feature back in Buffalo, but his 18 touches didn't produce very good results. He'll continue to be the workhorse because the other options aren't very good.
Description: 49ers running back Frank Gore had another dull day, rushing for 63 yards on 12 carries.
Insight: Gore's average was nice at 5.3 ypc, but he didn't see enough work or get into the end zone. Gore hasn't cracked the 100-yard mark since Week 5 and his fantasy value has taken a significant hit in the second half of the season.
Description: Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell had another monster game.
Insight: He rushed 26 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns, along with totaling six catches for 50 yards and another score. Remember in the preseason when everybody thought Bell would be splitting carries?
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles injured his foot on a run in the first quarter, but looks like he should return. Update: He has returned.
Insight: Charles is off to a great start with three carries for 74 yards and a touchdown, so obviously fantasy owners wanted him back in the lineup as soon as possible. He scored a second time on an 18-yard screen pass.
Description: Raiders running back Latavius Murray (concussion) is active for Week 14 against the 49ers.
Insight: Murray has the most talent of any Oakland option, but he'll be hard-pressed to break out against San Francisco's defense. Still, it's better than running Darren McFadden or Maurice Jones-drew.
Description: Buccaneers running back Doug Martin should see a slight increase in snaps on Sunday.
Insight: Bobby Rainey is out, so Martin and Charlie Sims will split the workload. However, with a tough matchup against the solid run-defense of the Lions, we do not recommend Martin as anything more than a flex.
Description: The NFL and the NFLPA could still reach a settlement regarding Adrian Peterson's season-ending suspension according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
Insight: The independent arbitrator is encouraging the two sides to work out a deal, but neither side has bugde yet. Any settlement would have to come before the arbitrator issues his ruling and since it is reported by Peter King that Peterson is likely to win the appeal, it seems more likely a settlement is coming. Either way, it is still a long shot Peterson plays, and even if he does, it might be difficult to play him with a championship fantasy on the line.
