San Francisco Giants Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Madison Bumgarner, SPHot10/1/2014 10:39:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner will likely not be rattled in the NL Wild Card game like Johnny Cueto was a season ago.
Insight: Bumgarner is one of the most poised 25-year-old pitchers there is in the game and there certainly isn't one more fiery. Just about a week ago, he basically challenged headcase Yasiel Puig to a fight. San Francisco didn't have many choices as to who to start for this game, but they have the right guy on the mound.
Hunter Pence, RF10/1/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is a career .194 (7-for-36) hitter against Pirates starter Edison Volquez.
Insight: Pence does have three homers against Volquez but has also struck out 16 times. Pence hit .277 with 20 home runs, 74 RBI and 106 runs this season.
Brandon Belt, 1B10/1/2014 10:20:00 AM

Michael Morse, LF9/30/2014 8:46:00 PM
Description: Giants left fielder Michael Morse is likely to be left off the National League Wild Card roster on Wednesday due to a strained left oblique according to Mercury News.
Insight: There was a previous possibility of him being on the roster as a potential pinch-hitter, but that seems unlikely at this point. Even if the Giants advance, Morse doesn't look like he will be much of a factor this October.
Tim Lincecum, SP9/28/2014 7:14:00 PM
Description: Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum picks up win in relief Sunday.
Insight: It was his 12th win, after going two innings. Lincecum is simply not the same pitcher he used to be, as he finishes the year with a 4.74 ERA.
Buster Posey, C/1B9/28/2014 6:54:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey belted his 22nd homer Sunday.
Insight: He was 1-for-2 before getting the rest of the afternoon off. Posey finishes off 2014 slashing .311/.364/.490 with 89 RBI. There is a fine chance he takes hom NL MVP honors.
Hunter Pence, RF9/27/2014 2:36:00 PM
Description: It's a rare day off for Giants right fielder Hunter Pence who is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Pence has played 160 games this season, meaning it's the first game he's missed in 2014. He played 162 last season and 160 in 2012. He's the definition of everyday player and that's how he gets solid fantasy numbers. He's batting .279 with 20 HR, 74 RBI, 106 runs and 13 steals.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B9/27/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 12-for-28 (.429) against Padres starter Eric Stultz.
Insight: Sandoval is 3-for-7 in the first two games of the series to raise his average to .279 with 16 HR and 73 RBI.
Buster Posey, C/1BHot9/26/2014 8:18:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey underwent an MRI on his back Friday according to Andrew Baggarly of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
Insight: Posey has been dealing with soreness in his back recently, so the MRI was just precautionary. It came back negative, but Posey will still have Friday off to rest for October.
Buster Posey, C/1BHot9/26/2014 11:24:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is 15-for-36 (.417) against Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy.
Insight: Posey should be able to continue his monster September with another favorable matchup. In this month, Posey is hitting .390 with three home runs, 16 RBI and a 1.008 OPS.
Hunter Pence, RF9/25/2014 10:57:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence has had a great season, but Thursday's matchup is not in his favor.
Insight: Pence is 2-for-16 (.125) in his career against Padres starter Andrew Cashner. Pence has had a good season, but over his last ten games, he has just three hits. Avoid this matchup.
Buster Posey, C/1BHot9/25/2014 10:53:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is 7-for-15 (.467) including two home runs and three RBI against Padres starter Andrew Cashner.
Insight: Posey should be able to continue his incredible September with this matchup. In this month, Posey is hitting .375/.416/.550 with three home runs and 15 RBI. He has entered the MVP race with .308 batting average, 21 home runs and 86 RBI this season.
Tim Hudson, SPCold9/25/2014 9:50:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Hudson could not best Clayton Kershaw, throwing five 1/3 frames and allowing three runs on five hits.
Insight: Hudson struck out four and walked one in another below average start for the right hander. Hudson has pitched awful in September, going 0-4 with a 9.92 ERA. The 39-year-old has been complaining about a sore hip in the last week, and since before the month started, Hudson's season ERA was 2.90, it is not inconceivable to believe his hip as been bothering him all month.
Angel Pagan, CF9/23/2014 8:25:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is done for the season after it was announced he will undergo season-ending back surgery.
Insight: He will have the procedure on Thursday, and Gregor Blanco and Juan Perez will continue to handle the center field duties. In 96 games, Pagan hit .300 with three homeruns and had 16 stolen bases. He should be ready for spring training.
Hunter Pence, RF9/22/2014 2:06:00 PM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is just 1-for-16 in his career against Dodgers right-hander Dan Haren.
Insight: Pence is doing what he does every season ... accumulate stats. He's batting .286 with 20 HR, 73 RBI, 105 runs and 13 steals. He's just not a good choice for Monday night.
Angel Pagan, CF9/21/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is questionable to play in the upcoming series against the Dodgers.
Insight: Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle this news on Saturday. San Francisco would love to get Pagan back for the final week as they continue to fight for the top wild card spot, but do not be surprised if he plays sparingly until the playoffs.
Buster Posey, C/1BHot9/21/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is 14-for-33 (.424) with three RBI against Padres starter Ian Kennedy.
Insight: As a surprise to most, not due to his talent but because of the position he plays, Posey has not slowed down at all in Septemeber. Posey is batting .413/.451/.635 with three home runs and 15 RBI this month. The catcher should again be in your lineup on Sunday.
Hunter Pence, RF9/21/2014 9:24:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence hit his 20th homer of the season against the Padres on Saturday.
Insight: Pence led off the top of the ninth with a solo home run to cut the Padre lead, 3-1. It was the first run charged to San Diego starter Andrew Cashner. Relief pitcher Kevin Quackenbush came on to barely close the door as San Diego won, 3-2. Pence is hitting .288/.342/.463 with 73 RBI, 13 stolen bases and 105 runs to go along with the 20 homers.
Yusmeiro Petit, SP9/21/2014 9:18:00 AM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit pitched five 1/3 innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits, struck out seven and walked three in a loss to the Padres.
Insight: Not a bad start by any means, but San Diego's Andrew Cashner outpitched Petit with eight shutout innings. The Giants did tag Cashner for two runs in the ninth, but the Padres held on to win. Petit has lost his last two starts and is 5-5 with a 3.63 ERA.
Buster Posey, C/1BHot9/20/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs and a 1.378 OPS versus Padres starter Andrew Cashner.
Insight: Unlike most catchers who get tired as the season comes to a close, Posey has put the Giants on his back with a .336 August and a .407 September. in this favorable matchup he's a must start.
Brandon Belt, 1B9/19/2014 7:26:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt (concussion) is back in the Giants starting lineup on Friday.
Insight: Belt has not played due to concussion symptoms since early August. The first baseman has been out much of the season with injuries, and he is hitting .237/.299/.446 when he is in the lineup.
Michael Morse, LF9/17/2014 3:40:00 PM
Description: Giants left fielder Michael Morse (strained left oblique) has long passed his Tuesday return and the latest is he is likely to miss through Friday.
Insight: Gregor Blanco has been starting in left field with Morse sidelined, but can't supply Morse's power.
Buster Posey, C/1B9/17/2014 2:05:00 PM
Description: Buster Posey is getting start at first base this afternoon for the Giants.
Insight: After jetting into the MVP discussion, San Francisco would be foolish to keep his bat out of the lineup. Posey goes to first, with Joaquin Arias getting the start at second base, and Andrew Susac will handling the duties behind the plate.
Madison Bumgarner, SPHot9/17/2014 9:17:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner has been on a tear of late, as he heads into today's start against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Bumgarner is arguably the hottest pitcher in baseball with a record of 5-0 and a 1.80 ERA, over the past 28 days. He has a ridiculous 41 strikeouts during during that span. To pump up owners even more, this guy is 11-3 with a 2.00 ERA on the road in 2014. Expect big things this afternoon, when the Giants finish off a series in Arizona
Buster Posey, CHot9/17/2014 12:22:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey went 2-for-4 with a solo home run as San Francisco defeated Arizona, 2-1, on Tuesday.
Insight: Posey has continued his very strong second half with an incredible .449 batting average in September. He also has a slugging percentage off the charts in the month (.673) and an OPS of 1.146. With so many MVP candidates injured, Posey is a viable candidate in the NL.
Buster Posey, CHot9/16/2014 11:51:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey will have a great chance to continue his hot streak tonight against Arizona starter Josh Collmenter.
Insight: Posey has been scorching over the past 28 days with averages of .452/.470/.785, seven homeruns and 27 RBI. Now, heading into tonight's game against the Diamondbacks, Posey is hitting .643 (9-for-14) with two homers and seven RBI against Collmenter, throughout his career. He has catapulted himself into the MVP race, and will look to continue his stellar play Tuesday night in Arizona.
Hunter Pence, RF9/15/2014 10:08:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is just 2-for-19 (.111) against Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley, including eight strikeouts.
Insight: Pence had a huge month of August (.314, .907 OPS), but has cooled a bit in September and faces a tough matchup. It's probably best to avoid him Monday.
Buster Posey, CHot9/15/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is a career .409 hitter with a 1.140 OPS versus Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley.
Insight: Just in case you hadn't notice, Posey is getting better as the season progresses. Unlike most catchers who tire late in the season, he's been hot down the stretch, batting .441 over the past 23 games with the division title on the line. Let him carry your fantasy team to the title too.
Yusmeiro Petit, SPHot9/14/2014 7:37:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit pitched seven innings and allowed three earned runs, but he fell victim to Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Petit threw his second straight quality start, but Kershaw outpitched him. Petit finished with eight strikeouts and no walks. We expect Petit to get another chance to start next week.
Angel Pagan, CF9/14/2014 12:33:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is a career .314 (11-for-35) hitter against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Pagan also has three doubles against Kershaw. It is hard justifying starting anyone against Kershaw, but if you are going to plug anyone in against the tough lefty, it should be Pagan.
Tim Hudson, SPCold9/14/2014 10:46:00 AM
Description: Giants right-hander Tim Hudson lasted one inning, yielding six runs on eight hits to the Dodgers on Saturday.
Insight: Hudson did not walk anyone, so he had that going for him, which is nice. Even still, the outing was his worst of the season. Hudson has lost his last two starts and his ERA has risen to 3.41. He has not won since Aug. 22.

Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is just 2-for-18 (.111) against Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley.

Insight: Pagan is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts against Colorado left-hander Franklin Morales.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B8/31/2014 9:33:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run, three RBI and three runs against the Brewers on Sunday.
Insight: Sandoval was 6-for-12 in the weekend series against the Brewers. If not for a horrible April where Sandoval hit .176, he would be in the batting title conversation. August was the third baseman's best month this year as he hit .321 with 15 RBI, 13 runs and a .785 OPS, but he did only hit two home runs.
Hunter Pence, RF8/31/2014 9:25:00 PM

Yusmeiro Petit, SPHot8/29/2014 8:06:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit will make another start for the Giants on Tuesday against the Rockies.
Insight: Giants manager Bruce Bochy will more than likely ride out Petit's hot streak by keeping him in the starting rotation. If he pitches well in the hitter-friendly Coors Field, then we expect him to keep Tim Lincecum's spot in the rotation for the rest of the season.
Yusmeiro Petit, SPHot8/29/2014 11:53:00 AM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit started on Thursday in place of Tim Lincecum and went six innings yielding four hits and one run with nine strikeouts.

Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated after Thursday's game that he plans to go with a closer by committee for the rest of the season.
Insight: Casilla earned his 12th save of the season on Thursday, but Bochy said he nearly used Casilla in the eighth and considered taking him out in the ninth after he issued a leadoff walk. Casilla has just one blown save since taking over the closer role, but he has allowed five runs in his last 11 appearances. Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affledt and Casilla could all get save opportunities. has locked down the closer role since he replaced Sergio Romo in late June. He's thrown 9 1/3 innings, struck out nine, allowed one run on five hits and gone 8-for-8 in save chances since he took the job.
Angel Pagan, CF8/28/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's victory over the Rockies.
Insight: Pagan also had a stole base. The center fielder broke out of a little slump as he came into the game hitting .188 in his last four games.
Yusmeiro Petit, SP8/28/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit started on Thursday in place of Tim Lincecum. Petit came into the game having retired his last 38 batters over the course of seven relief appearances. Petit retired the first eight batters to set a new major league record of 46 straight hitters retired. who has thrown 12 1/3 perfect innings in a row while striking out 16 batters in that span, will replace Tim Lincecum in the rotation.
Insight: Petit went on to pitch six innings and gave up one run in the Giants victory. Despite breaking the record, Petit is not guaranteed to start again, so his fantasy value remains limited. We expect that he will get at least one more chance to start, but check back in the next few days to make sure.
Brandon Crawford, SS8/28/2014 2:37:00 PM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is not in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: Crawford has batted just .197 in August after posting a .173 batting average in July, meanwhile he's already set a personal mark for strikeouts (112). I'd be avoiding him even if he were in the lineup.

Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence is a lifetime 5-for-11 hitter with one home run against Rockies pitcher Franklin Morales.
Insight: Pence has a eight-game hitting streak and hits in 19 of his last 21 games. In the last week, Pence is hitting 10-for-28 (.357) with two home runs and five RBI over the last week.
Madison Bumgarner, SPHot8/27/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking none, in the 3-0 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.
Insight: Bumgarner was nearly perfect as he did not give up the lone hit until Justin Morneau belted a double in the eighth. That was the only Rockies baserunner all night. In Bumgarner's last five starts, the pitcher is 3-1 in 40 innings pitched with a 1.58 ERA, 49 strikeouts, just two walks and has two complete game shutouts. Bumgarner is 13-9 with a 3.14 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 167 Ks in 169 innings. He's on pace for a career high in innings and strikeouts.
Yusmeiro Petit, SP8/25/2014 8:47:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, who has thrown 12 1/3 perfect innings in a row while striking out 16 batters in that span, will replace Tim Lincecum in the rotation.
Insight: Petit last started on July 22 and allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings at Philadelphia. He has a 6.32 ERA in six starts and a 1.83 ERA over 27 relief appearances this season, so there's little reason to get excited about him in most leagues.
Tim Lincecum, SPCold8/25/2014 8:45:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum has been pulled from the rotation, according to Carl Steward of the Bay Area News Group. Yusmeiro Petit will take his spot for now.
Insight: Lincecum went 4-1 with a 0.95 ERA from June 25 to July 22, but he's posted a 9.49 ERA and a 2.27 WHIP since then. Manager Bruce Bochy indicated he hopes Lincecum can regain his spot, but there's no reason for fantasy owners to hold him.
Angel Pagan, CF8/24/2014 3:52:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (calf) is expected to return Monday, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Pagan was out of the lineup two of the past three games with calf tightness, but it isn't considered a major issue for the veteran.
Hunter Pence, RF8/23/2014 8:27:00 PM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence hit a two-run home run against the Nationals on Saturday for his 18th of the season. Pence went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run in the game.
Insight: Pence has a five-game hitting streak and hits in 16 of his last 18 games, but that is a little misleading as Pence is batting just .246 over that stretch.
Tim Lincecum, SPCold8/23/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum continues his cold streak as he exits Saturday's game after just two and 2/3 innings pitch, allowing six runs, four earned on six hits and four walks.
Insight: Lincecum is on the hook for the loss as the Giants trail the Nationals, 6-2, in the bottom of the third inning. The former CY Young award winner has won just once since July 12.
Angel Pagan, CF8/23/2014 1:52:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (calf) is in the lineup Saturday against Washington.
Insight: Pagan went 2-for-5 before leaving Friday's game with calf tightness, but it was a precautionary move. He's leading off and playing center field.
Angel Pagan, CF8/22/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan left Friday's game with calf tightness, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Insight: Madison Bumgarner and Posey became the first pitcher-catcher combo to hit grand slams in the same game. The 27-year-old Posey has .275 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI this season, but he needs to do more to justify his high draft position in fantasy leagues.
Hunter Pence, RF7/12/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence is just 2-for-15 with seven strikeouts versus Arizona Wade Miley.
Insight: Pence is up to his usual tricks having played in all 94 games this season and batting .303 with 12 homers and an .835 OPS. this matchup, however, should be avoided.
Buster Posey, C7/12/2014 10:44:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey was not in the lineup Friday against Arizona, but will be back behind the plate for Saturday and has a favorable matchup.
Insight: Hector Sanchez has become Tim Lincecum's personal catcher, so Posey got Friday night off. Posey is a career .529 hitter (9-for-17) against Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley.
Marco Scutaro, 2B7/11/2014 9:45:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) has been activated from the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: Scutaro hasn't played since spring training and he underwent a non-surgical procedure similar to a PRP therapy in May designed to "speed up the process" of his return from a back injury. He's not in Friday's lineup but should start Saturday.
Buster Posey, CCold7/11/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is not in the lineup Friday against Arizona.

Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/8/2014 7:15:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval (elbow) is in the lineup Tuesday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/7/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval (elbow) is out of the lineup Monday.

Description: San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum is a career 15-6 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.121 WHIP in 28 starts against the San Diego Padres. He's 8-3 on the road in Petco Park.
Insight: Lincecum no hit the Padres on June 25 and threw eight shut out innings last Tuesday against St. Louis, so there is no one hotter than the Giants right-hander. With San Diego struggling at the plate (2.98 rpg, .214 BA) Lincecum should be set for another top quality outing.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B7/5/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Saturday night's game with a left elbow contusion, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Mercury News.
Insight: Sandoval took a pitch off the elbow his first time up. Figure him to be day-to-day.
Tim Hudson, SPCold7/5/2014 11:52:00 AM
Description: Giants right-hander Tim Hudson hasn't been his sharpest of late, limping into Saturday's start against San Diego with an 0-3 record and 6.38 ERA in his last three starts.
Insight: The good news for Hudson (7-5, 2.59 ERA) owners is that he'll be pitching at Petco Park. The bad news is that after lowering his ERA to 1.81 through 13 starts, he's been shaky in two of his last three, including two weeks ago against the Padres in a game where he allowed six runs (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings.
Brandon Belt, 1B7/4/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt (thumb) will return Friday, but it's a tough matchup for him.

Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 12-for-25 (.480) with a 1.232 OPS against San Diego left-hander Eric Stults.
Insight: Sandoval isn't hitting up to his past numbers as he cooled last week batting .200 over the past five games.
Buster Posey, C7/4/2014 9:40:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is a career .444 hitter (8-for-18) with a pair of homers against Padres left-hander Eric Stults.
Insight: Posey's hot streak of last week is gone as he batted just .222 over the past five games, but this favorable matchup may help.

Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan will have an epidural on his back, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Tim Lincecum, SPHot7/2/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum threw eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball Tuesday against St. Louis after tossing a no-hitter his last time out. Lincecum has lowered his ERA from 4.90 to 4.06 in his last two starts and will face the Padres team he's no-hit twice in the past year on Sunday.
Insight: Perhaps Lincecum has finally realized his four-seam fastball is no longer useful. He's thrown it a career-low 31 percent of the time this season and increased his slider usage to a career-high 28.5 percent. Lincecum has actually allowed three runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts, but his June 3 start at Cincinnati (4 1/3, 8 ER) is muddying the results. He's served up just four homers in his last 78 2/3 innings.
Brandon Belt, 1B7/1/2014 9:16:00 PM
Description: The Giants plan to have first baseman Brandon Belt back in the lineup Friday, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Belt (.264, 9 HR, 18 RBI) hasn't played since breaking his thumb in early May. Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Belt's thumb is still sore and that he's "not quite ready yet." Belt has gone 10-for-17 (.588) with three homers during his rehab assignment so if he's not ready, he's close.
Angel Pagan, CF7/1/2014 8:01:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan suffered a setback with his lower-back injury while running Monday, according to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Pagan was eligible to rejoin the team Tuesday, but he could now be out an extended period of time. He has a bulging disc and will see a specialist in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Angel Pagan, CF7/1/2014 6:41:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (back) is still on the disabled list.
Insight: Pagan was eligible to rejoin the team Tuesday, but he's not ready to return from his back strain.
Tim Hudson, SP6/29/2014 6:53:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Tim Hudson gave up two runs on five hits over eight innings Sunday against the Reds, but he took a tough-luck loss.
Insight: Hudson (7-5, 2.59 ERA) gave up 11 earned runs on 21 hits over 10 1/3 innings his previous two starts, so fantasy owners should be content with Sunday's performance despite the loss.
Sergio Romo, RPCold6/29/2014 3:35:00 PM
Description: Giants closer Sergio Romo has been removed from the role following Saturday's blown save.
Insight: It was Romo's fifth blown save of the season. Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt will share the role for now, but don't be surprised if Romo eventually wins back the ninth-inning job.
Buster Posey, C6/29/2014 11:05:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is a career .091 hitter (1-for-11) against Reds right-hander Homer Bailey.
Insight: Might be a good time for a day off. Posey has raised his average to .293 with nine homers and 40 RBI after an excellent June (.367, 2 HR, 15 RBI).
Matt Cain, SP6/29/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain allowed no runs in seven innings on Saturday after allowing six and seven earned runs, respectively, in his previous two outings.
Insight: The schizophrenic Cain (1-6, 4.38 ERA, 1.231 WHIP) is impossible to predict these days as he goes from horrible to very good and back again.
Angel Pagan, CF6/28/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (back) is hoping to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, according to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Pagan has been dealing with a back strain since the middle of the month and was finally placed on the disabled list on June 25, but he's eligible to return for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals because the move was backdated to June 15.
Tyler Colvin, RF6/26/2014 9:43:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Tyler Colvin isn't an everyday player, but if he's in the lineup against Reds right-hander Mike Leake you should start him.
Insight: Colvin is 7-for-19 (.368) with four of the seven hits being home runs against Leake. The wind is blowing out to center at AT&T Park.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BHot6/26/2014 9:41:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is 11-for-17 (.647) with two homers and a 1.784 OPS against Reds right-hander Mike Leake.
Insight: Sandoval isn't hitting up to his past numbers, but has batted .333 with an .870 OPS for the past two weeks (11 games). Add in a strong wind blowing out to center and you have a must start.
Buster Posey, CHot6/25/2014 9:14:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey went 4-for-4 Wednesday to raise his average to .291.
Insight: He was also on first base to catch the last out of Tim Lincecum's no-hitter. Posey is now hitting .366 in the month of June.
Tim Lincecum, SP6/25/2014 6:30:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum tossed a no-hitter Wednesday against the Padres.
Insight: It's the same team he no-hit last July. Lincecum was much more efficient this time, finishing off the Friars in only 113 pitches. His only blemish was a second inning walk to Chase Headley. Lincecum (6-5, 4.47 ERA) also had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Angel Pagan, CF6/25/2014 2:56:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (back) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Pagan's back inflammation hasn't been improving. The move was backdated to June 15, so Pagan is eligible to return on June 30, but it's not a given he'll be ready to come off the disabled list at that point.
Buster Posey, CHot6/25/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is 11-for-30 (.367) against San Diego right-hander Ian Kennedy with three doubles.
Insight: Posey's lifetime numbers against Kennedy are great, but keep in mind he's struggled mightily at AT&T Park this season, hitting just .226 at home compared to .342 on the road. Still, seven of his nine home runs this year have come against righties.
Tim Hudson, SPCold6/25/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Giants right-hander Tim Hudson has allowed 11 earned runs on 21 hits over 10 1/3 innings his last two starts.
Insight: Hudson has a 1.81 ERA before that, but it increased to 2.62 after he gave up six runs (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings against the lowly Padres Tuesday night. He still has a 1.11 WHIP due to a 1.44 BB/9. He'll take on the Reds at home in his next start.
Brandon Belt, 1B6/24/2014 8:38:00 PM
Description: San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt will start a rehab assignment with High-A San Jose on Thursday. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Belt (.264, 9 HR, 18 RBI) hasn't played since breaking his thumb in early May. He should be back in the majors sometime next week.
Angel Pagan, CF6/24/2014 6:56:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan won't play Tuesday against the Padres. SOURCE: Giants on Twitter
Insight: Pagan's back inflammation doesn't seem to be healing. Gregor Blanco (.248, 0 HR, 15 RBI) is getting another start at center field.
Matt Cain, SPCold6/24/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain allowed six runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings Monday against the Padres.
Insight: It's not a good sign for Cain that he couldn't shut down the Padres, who have the worst offense in baseball. The right-hander has allowed 17 earned runs on 20 hits in 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts and now has a 4.82 ERA, though his WHIP remains a solid 1.24.
Marco Scutaro, 2B6/23/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday.
Insight: Scutaro hasn't played since spring training. He underwent a non-surgical procedure similar to a PRP therapy in May designed to "speed up the process" of his return from a back injury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It's still going to be a few weeks before he's able to return to the Giants.
Angel Pagan, CF6/23/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan (back) is still out of the lineup.

Adam Duvall, 3B6/23/2014 2:54:00 PM
Description: Giants minor league third baseman Adam Duvall has hit 23 home runs with 66 RBI through 65 games at Triple-A Reno.
Insight: Duvall is just 25, but he's displayed power at every level of the minors and could be called up if Pablo Sandoval goes down with an injury.
Madison Bumgarner, SPHot6/22/2014 6:52:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner tossed a gem Sunday at Arizona, going eight innings and allowing just an unearned run on two hits.
Insight: Bumgarner was headed for his second shutout, but a throwing error and an infield single to start the ninth inning ended his day at 112 pitches. The left-hander is 9-4 with a 2.63 ERA and a 111/25 K/BB in 102 2/3 innings this season.
Angel Pagan, CF6/22/2014 2:53:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan won't start Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area Sports Group
Insight: The absence is related to a back injury he suffered earlier in the week. Gregor Blanco (.256, 0 HR, 15 RBI) will take his place in center field.
Michael Morse, OF/1B6/22/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Giants OF/1B Michael Morse left Saturday's game because of back tightness. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: Morse went 1-for-3 before exiting in the fifth inning. He won't play Sunday but it's possible Morse (.286, 13 HR, 44 RBI) could return in time for Monday's series opener against the Padres.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BHot6/22/2014 9:52:00 AM

Angel Pagan, CF6/21/2014 7:14:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan will miss his fifth consecutive game Saturday against Arizona. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Apparently Pagan (.307, 3 HR, 19 RBI) tweaked his back at yesterday's batting practice. Gregor Blanco (.256, 0 HR, 15 RBI) will have to fill in at center field.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B6/21/2014 10:48:00 AM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval is hitless in nine at-bats against Arizona right-hander Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: Sandoval's batting average has dropped for four consecutive seasons and his fantasy value is minimal these days. Saturday's fantasy value should be less than that.
Hunter Pence, RF6/21/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence has batted .438 (7-for-16) against Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: Pence is up to his usual tricks batting .297 with 10 homers and an .836 OPS.

Description: San Francisco right-hander Tim Hudson had his worst start of the year Wednesday against the White Sox.
Insight: Hudson gave up 12 hits (2 HR) and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. Hudson had allowed seven earned runs combined in his previous 43 2/3 innings and 18 in his first 89 1/3 innings this season.
Angel Pagan, CF6/18/2014 4:32:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan flew to Arizona Wednesday to undergo further testing on his injured back. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area Sports Group
Insight: That's not what fantasy owners want to hear. You may want to start looking at other options in case Pagan (.307, 3 HR, 19 RBI) lands on the disabled list.
Angel Pagan, CF6/18/2014 12:01:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan won't start Wednesday's game against the White Sox. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area News Group
Insight: A recent MRI revealed inflammation in his lower back. It's unlikely Pagan (.307, 3 HR, 19 RBI) will require a DL stint but it's certainly worth monitoring. Juan Perez (.143, 1 HR, 2 RBI) is starting in his place.

Buster Posey, C6/17/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey left Sunday's game after taking a foul ball off his mask and is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: He went 1-for-2 before exiting in the fourth inning, saying his head "feels a little weird." Hector Sanchez (.226, 3 HR, 24 RBI) is his replacement option. It's only a matter of time before the Giants move their best hitter/player out of the catching position ... probably for the start of the 2015 season.
Angel Pagan, CF6/17/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan could be back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the White Sox, but is listed as questionable with a stiff lower back.

Santiago Casilla, RP6/15/2014 9:36:00 PM
Description: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Buster Posey, C6/15/2014 5:53:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey left Sunday's game after taking a foul ball off his mask. SOURCE: Carl Steward, Bay Area News Group

Tim Hudson, SPHot6/12/2014 9:35:00 PM
Description: San Francisco right-hander Tim Hudson had an outstanding game Thursday against Washington.
Insight: He held the Nats to one run (it was unearned) over seven innings. Hudson, the National League's current ERA leader at 1.81, hasn't lost since May 6th against Pittsburgh. That was seven starts ago.
Hunter Pence, RF6/12/2014 9:29:00 PM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence reached base five times in Thursday's win over the Nationals.
Insight: Pence collected three singles and two walks. He's hitting .314 with six homers and 14 RBI since May 1st. Before that, he was hitting only .272 with two homers and nine RBI.
Michael Morse, OF/1B6/12/2014 9:25:00 PM

Pablo Sandoval, 3B6/11/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk Tuesday against Washington.
Insight: Slowly but surely, Sandoval is getting his numbers back to a respectable level. He has batted .345 with six homers, 20 RBI and a .940 OPS in his last 29 games after hitting .173 with two homers, six RBI and a .526 OPS in his first 35.
Angel Pagan, CF6/10/2014 7:32:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan is starting Tuesday's game against Washington. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area News Group
Insight: A bruised shin kept Pagan out of the lineup yesterday, though he did make a pinch-hitting appearance in the ninth inning. He doesn't have much power but Pagan (.321, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 11 SB) is a good contact hitter with decent speed. Until he slows down, Pagan should be starting in all fantasy formats.
Angel Pagan, CF6/9/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (knee) is not in the lineup for the second straight game Monday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Angel Pagan, CF6/8/2014 3:19:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is getting a scheduled day off Sunday, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Insight: Posey has hit .370 (10-for-27) with a home run in his last six games after dealing with a nerve irritation in his back at the end of May and going 5-for-45 (.111) from May 13-28.
Angel Pagan, CF6/8/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan went 3-for-5 with two RBI Saturday against the Mets.

Matt Cain, SP6/6/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: He missed a couple turns in the rotation because of a strained hamstring. Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) will get the ball Friday against New York. He hasn't faced the Mets yet in 2014 but Cain was 0-1 against them with a 3.24 ERA in two starts last season.
Hunter Pence, RF6/6/2014 10:03:00 AM

Insight: Pence is batting .290 with eight homers, 22 RBI, 44 runs, seven steals and an .838 OPS. He's rarely spectacular, but usually gets the job done. This matchup, however, should be avoided.

Insight: San Francisco's middle-infield tandem of Crawford and Brandon Hicks have combined for 15 home runs and 49 RBI but are hitting .211 collectively. Crawford is batting .236 with a .748 OPS.

Madison Bumgarner, SPHot6/5/2014 4:09:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner posted another quality outing, going eight innings and yielding just three hits and a run.
Insight: Bumgarner (8-3) has allowed one run or less in his last three starts to lower his ERA to 2.68. He's a top-tier fantasy starter and still just 24-years-old.
Tyler Colvin, RF6/5/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Giants outfielder Tyler Colvin isn't an everyday player, but if he's in the lineup against Reds right-hander Mike Leake you have to seriously consider him. Update: Colvin is batting sixth and playing left field.
Insight: Colvin is 6-for-17 (.353) with four of the six hits being home runs against Leake. Colvin has gone to the plate just 50 times this season, but owns an .835 OPS.

Matt Cain, SP6/4/2014 5:57:00 PM

Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) went on the disabled list a few days ago after determining he wouldn't be able to start on Saturday, though the move was retroactive to his last start on May 22 so he's eligible to come off it already.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPHot6/4/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right-hander Ryan Vogelsong won his third straight decision Wednesday at Cincinnati. He struck out nine with one walk and allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum allowed eight runs on six hits with three walks in 4 1/3 innings Tuesday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Lincecum (4-4, 5.01 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) had a no-hitter through five innings in his last start but left with a blister. He still misses bats frequently (64 Ks in 64 2/3 IP) but gets hit extremely hard when he allows contact.
Brandon Belt, 1B6/3/2014 6:35:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt expects to shed his removable cast for good Friday and begin the full rehab process in his return from a fractured left thumb, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Belt suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch from Paul Maholm nearly four weeks ago. Doctors will likely take X-rays Friday to determine if his thumb has healed. "The way it feels, I can't imagine they'll find anything," Belt said. "It feels great." If he's cleared to start his rehab, he'll need roughly two weeks before he can return to the Giants lineup.
Michael Morse, LF6/3/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Giants OF/1B Michael Morse is back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Cincinnati.
Insight: He missed Sunday's game with a sore foot. After a hot start to the season, Morse has slowed down a bit, recording just one homer over his last 13 games. Still, he's tied for sixth in the NL with 11 jacks and should be one of fantasy's better outfield options going forward.
Buster Posey, CCold6/3/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey has never gotten a hit off Reds starter Homer Bailey (0-for-8).
Insight: Posey has been struggling over the past month, batting just .219 over the last 18 games. Still, he's a top-tier fantasy catcher, who will eventually break out of the slump. Just not on Tuesday.
Tim Hudson, SP6/1/2014 9:36:00 PM
Description: Tim Hudson was dealing Sunday against the Cardinals (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K's, 2 BB).
Insight: He hasn't given up a run in his last two starts. If Hudson's dominance carries over into the second half of the season he could be a candidate for the National League Cy Young Award.
Joaquin Arias, 3B6/1/2014 9:32:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Joaquin Arias smashed three hits in Sunday's win over the Cardinals.
Insight: That's as many hits as he had in the entire month of May. Don't count on Arias (.174, 0 HR, 5 RBI) to be much of a factor this season.

Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey (3-for-5) broke out of a slump Sunday against St. Louis.
Insight: He had been two for his last 22 prior to Sunday. Though Posey's average is down (.264) his power numbers are about the same as last year. He's still a top-tier fantasy catcher.

Yusmeiro Petit, SP5/31/2014 9:48:00 PM
Description: Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit pitched well in Saturday's loss to St. Louis.
Insight: Petit (3-3, 4.60 ERA) kept San Francisco in the game by allowing two hits and one run over six innings. He should get at least a few more turns in the starting rotation while Matt Cain recovers from a strained hamstring.
Buster Posey, CCold5/31/2014 12:18:00 AM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey (back) is not in the lineup for the third straight game Saturday.
Insight: Posey has been dealing with a nerve irritation in his back since he took a hard swing on May 18. He's also hit just .094 (3-for-32) in his last 10 games. Hector Sanchez gets another start, but he's just a .237 hitter with a .637 OPS. That's not fantasy worthy.
Matt Cain, SP5/30/2014 6:18:00 PM
Description: Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) won't start Saturday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday without any issues and appeared to be ready to go, but the Giants will keep him out for a second straight start due to a hamstring strain. Yusmeiro Petit will make another start in his place.

Description: Tim Lincecum left his no-hit bid Wednesday because of a blister on his right middle finger. SOURCE: Giants.mlb.com
Insight: Lincecum's pitch count was at 96 but the Giants probably would have left him out for another inning if not for the blister. He should be okay for his next start Tuesday against the Reds.
Matt Cain, SP5/29/2014 7:26:00 PM
Description: The Giants haven't officially cleared right-hander Matt Cain for Saturday's start against St. Louis. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area News Group
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) missed his scheduled appearance Monday because of a strained hamstring but was able to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday without any issues. Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 5.08 ERA) would start Saturday if Cain can't get clearance.

Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner had his second 10-K game of the season Sunday against the Twins.
Insight: Bumgarner allowed one run on three hits in seven innings to lower his ERA to 3.15. He has 75 strikeouts and 17 walks in 65 2/3 innings this season. The left-hander's WHIP is 1.32 because his BABIP is .346, but that will correct itself over time.
Hunter Pence, RFHot5/25/2014 8:51:00 PM
Description: In his last 12 games, Giants right fielder Hunter Pence has gone 20-for-45 (.444) with three doubles, a triple, four home runs, eight RBI, and 11 runs.

Santiago Casilla, RP5/22/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: The Giants have placed reliever Santiago Casilla on the 15-day DL. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Mercury News
Insight: He's out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. That makes it slightly more severe than the Grade 1 strain teammate Matt Cain was diagnosed with earlier this week. Either way, Casilla (1-1, 1.37 ERA, eight holds) doesn't have much fantasy appeal.

Description: Giants minor league third baseman Adam Duvall is tied with Astros first base prospect Jon Singleton for the PCL lead in home runs with 10.
Insight: Duvall is 25 and isn't a highly regarded prospect but he's displayed power at every level of the minors and could be called up if Pablo Sandoval goes down with an injury.
Hunter Pence, RFCold5/8/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence has collected eight hits, including a homer, in 19 at-bats (.421) against Dodgers starter Josh Beckett.
Insight: Pence set career highs with 27 homers and 22 steals last season but he has batted .256 with two home runs in 133 at-bats this year. He'll see Beckett Thursday, which should help his numbers a bit.
Tim Lincecum, SPCold5/7/2014 3:37:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum gave up four runs on eight hits in four innings Wednesday afternoon at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Lincecum has been awful this season, plain and simple. He's allowed 50 hits, six homers and 22 earned runs in 35 2/3 innings (5.55 ERA). The right-hander has given up a line drive on 32.5 percent of his batted balls, so it's not surprising his BABIP is .393.
Angel Pagan, CF 5/7/2014 1:09:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan got a routine day off Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Pagan is batting .323 with three homers, 15 RBI, 14 runs and six steals this season and should be back in the lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.
Buster Posey, C5/7/2014 1:07:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey had a planned day off Wednesday against the Pirates.
Insight: Posey went 8-for-15 with a homer and four RBI over his last four games and the Giants gave him a rest on a getaway day.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold5/7/2014 1:04:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Pirates, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Sandoval is four for his last 25, and he hurt his left thumb Tuesday when Starling Marte kicked his glove while sliding into third base. Sandoval went into Tuesday's game with a first-pitch swing rate of 29.5 percent, down from 42.7 percent for his career. Starlin Castro had a similar dropoff last season when he stopped swinging at the first pitch as often as he did in the past.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold5/6/2014 9:58:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has gone 4-for-25 in his last seven games.
Insight: Sandoval's average dropped to .167 this season after he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Tuesday at Pittsburgh. The third baseman came into Tuesday's game with a first-pitch swing rate of 29.5 percent, down from 42.7 percent for his career. Starlin Castro had a similar dropoff last season when he stopped swinging at the first pitch as often as he did in the past.
Tim Hudson, SPHot5/6/2014 9:55:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Hudson threw a complete game in Tuesday's loss at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Hudson allowed a triple to Starling Marte with two outs in the ninth, and Marte scored on a throwing error by second baseman Ehire Adrianza to end the game. Hudson gave up two earned runs on five hits in 8 2/3 innings and is 4-2 with a 1.99 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP. The right-hander has thrown seven or more innings in all seven starts this season.
Angel Pagan, CFHot5/6/2014 1:24:00 PM
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is 9-for-12 (.750) with three extra-base hits against Pirates starter Charlie Morton.
Insight: Pagan has followed up a 2-for-17 (.118) stretch from April 19-23 with a 13-for-38 (.342) hot streak, and he has a good matchup Tuesday with Morton on the mound.
Matt Cain, SP5/5/2014 5:46:00 PM
Description: The Giants expect right-hander Matt Cain to return Saturday against the Dodgers. He was placed on the DL yesterday with a lacerated finger, though the move was made retroactive to April 24th. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: The Giants have a habit of overworking their starters and that's certainly been the case with Cain. After throwing 200+ innings in six straight seasons between 2007 and 2012, Cain looked shot last year, slumping to a 4.00 ERA in 30 appearances. He hasn't gotten off to a great start in 2014 (0-3, 4.35 ERA) and it's possible the 29-year-old has already peaked. We don't have much confidence in Cain going forward.
Matt Cain, SP5/4/2014 9:16:00 PM
Description: The Giants have placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24, with a lacerated finger.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) was scratched from last Tuesday's start due to the injury and wasn't going to be ready to go Monday against the Pirates, so the team had to make a move. They were able to back-date it to April 24, so Cain shouldn't have to miss another start. Yusmeiro Petit is expected to get the ball Monday, according to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold5/4/2014 6:28:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt went 0-for-5 Sunday at Atlanta.
Insight: Belt has collected two hits in his last 29 at-bats (.069) while striking out 14 times in that span. He has eight home runs, but five came in the first eight games.
Brandon Crawford, SS5/4/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford hit two homers and drove in three runs Sunday at Atlanta.
Insight: The career .242 hitter is batting .264 with three homers and 14 RBI this season. He doesn't offer much power, has four career steals and hits near the bottom of the order, so he's an NL-only option at best.
Michael Morse, LFHot5/3/2014 10:58:00 PM
Description: Giants left fielder Michael Morse batted fourth and hit his eighth homer of the season against Atlanta Saturday night.
Insight: It was his second homer in two nights. He only hit 13 all of last season and appears to be happy to be back in the National League. Morse is batting .312 and hitting between Buster Posey and Brandon Belt is a great spot in the lineup.
Buster Posey, C5/2/2014 4:02:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey will take a seat Friday against Atlanta.
Insight: Posey batting average is a bit down, but he's still hitting for power with six homers and an .833 OPS. He's just getting a day of rest, though fantasy owners would like him in the lineup as he's 4-for-8 over his career against Braves starter Mike Minor
Yusmeiro Petit, SP4/30/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right-hander Yusmeiro Petit pitched well in an emergency start Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Petit (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K's) was filling in for Matt Cain, who had to sit out with an injured finger. It was probably a one-time thing for Petit, as Cain is expected to make his next start. Petit (2-1, 2.61 ERA) made seven starts for the Giants during the 2013 season.
Matt Cain, SP4/29/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain has been scratched from his start on Tuesday's due to a cut on his right index finger, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) won't need stitches and should be ready to start when his next turn comes up. Yusmeiro Petit will start in his place on Tuesday against San Diego.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold4/29/2014 6:38:00 PM
Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will take a seat Tuesday.
Insight: Belt has gone 0-for-15 with 10 strikeouts over his last four games and manager Bruce Bochy will give him a chance to clear his head Tuesday. The first baseman started off with a .343 average and five homers in his first eight games but has hit .209 with two homers and 22 Ks over his last 17.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/29/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a career 12-for-24 against Padres starter Eric Stults.
Insight: It includes four extra base hits, but no home runs. Sandoval has struggled so far this season, batting just .172, so may not be ready to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP4/27/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong gave up two hits and no runs in seven innings Sunday against Cleveland but took a no decision.
Insight: Vogelsong permitted 14 earned runs on 24 hits and eight walks in his first 16 1/3 innings this season. The right-hander has been largely terrible since Aug. 2012 and needs to do a lot to regain the confidence of fantasy owners.
Brandon Belt, 1BCold4/27/2014 7:39:00 PM
Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he may give first baseman Brandon Belt a day off on Monday, according to Amy Gutierrez of csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Belt went 0-for-12 with nine Ks in San Francisco's three-game set against the Indians and has had just one day off all season. He has gone 14-for-64 with 21 strikeouts and two homers in 16 games since he started out with a .343 average and five homers in his first eight games.
Angel Pagan, CFCold4/25/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Angel Pagan's MRI revealed a small tear in his patellar tendon, but the injury won't keep him off the field at all, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Pagan (.329) didn't start Wednesday due to minor knee soreness but pinch hit and will start Friday. He's two for his last 17.
Angel Pagan, CFCold4/25/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan (knee) is back in the lineup Friday.
Insight: Pagan (.329) didn't start Wednesday due to minor knee soreness but pinch hit. He's two for his last 17.
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold4/25/2014 5:59:00 PM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval is in the starting lineup Friday.
Insight: He left Wednesday's game with an illness. Sandoval will take a .165 average and a .536 OPS into Friday's matchup against the Indians.
Roger Kieschnick, RF4/24/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Roger Kieschnick has been called up from Triple-A Reno and is in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: Kieschnick hit .281 with three homers in the minore this spring. If he plays well he could see plenty of action until Mark Trumbo returns from injury.
Matt Cain, SP 4/23/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain was roughed up by the Rockies on Wednesday at Coors Field.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits (2 HR) in six innings (4 K, 3 BB). He has allowed five homers in his two worst starts (9.00 ERA in 12 IP) and zero in the other three (1.42 ERA in 19 IP).
Hector Sanchez, C4/23/2014 7:59:00 PM
Description: With Buster Posey getting a day off, Giants backup catcher Hector Sanchez went 2-for-6 with two homers and five RBI Wednesday at Colorado.
Insight: He had three hits all season going into the game. Fantasy owners can ignore him.
Michael Morse, LF4/23/2014 7:56:00 PM
Description: Giants left fielder Michael Morse blasted two homers and drove in four runs Wednesday at Colorado.
Insight: Morse had gone 4-for-31 (.129) with 11 Ks over his previous 10 games. The slugger has five homers, 15 RBI and an .897 OPS after Wednesday's explosion.
Angel Pagan, CFCold4/23/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan was not in Wednesday's lineup at Colorado due to a sore knee, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Insight: Pagan said he's fine, but manager Bruce Bochy said he thought the center fielder looked a step or two off while running down some flares to the outfield that dropped Tuesday night. Pagan went 0-for-5 with three Ks in the game and is two for his last 16.
Hunter Pence, RFCold4/23/2014 11:35:00 AM
Description: Giants right fielder Hunter Pence hasn't had the season he was hoping for and it's probably not going to get much better on Wednesday.
Insight: That's because he's facing Colorado right-hander Tyler Chatwood, a pitcher he's hitless against in his career (0-for-14). Pence is barely hitting .200 right now (.213) and doesn't deserve to be starting in any fantasy leagues until he breaks out of his season-long slump.
Angel Pagan, CFCold4/23/2014 11:28:00 AM
Description: San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan will have his hands full Wednesday against Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood.
Insight: He has three hits in 17 career at bats against him (.176). Pagan has definitely slowed down after getting off to a great start. Over the last week, he's gone just 5-for-24 with one extra base hit (.208).
Pablo Sandoval, 3BCold4/23/2014 11:25:00 AM
Description: San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval owns a .417 career average against today's starting pitcher, Tyler Chatwood (1-0, 2.77 ERA).
Insight: Judging by his paltry .169 average this season, Panda hasn't found his stroke yet. But for once, Sandoval does have a favorable matchup with Chatwood throwing for Colorado today. We'll see if he can take advantage of it.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/20/2014 2:03:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is not in the lineup Sunday for the first time this season.

Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is a career .545 hitter against Padres left-hander Eric Stults.

Michael Morse, LF4/18/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: San Francisco left fielder Mike Morse will be given the night off Friday against San Diego. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle

Insight: Posey has caught the last five games for San Francisco so he was due for a day off. Hector Sanchez (.167, 0 HR, 3 RBI) will catch for Matt Cain on Friday.
Brandon Crawford, SS4/17/2014 9:45:00 AM
Description: San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford didn't start in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers and probably shouldn't be in Thursday's lineup based on an unfavorable matchup.
Insight: He's been dealing with a tight hamstring. He's also hitless in 10 at-bats versus Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Joaquin Arias will likely fill in at shortstop, but has shown little value with a bat in his hand.
Brandon Crawford, SS4/16/2014 8:42:00 PM
Description: San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford won't participate in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle

Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/16/2014 11:21:00 AM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is the owner of a .375 average against Dodgers starter Paul Maholm.
Insight: Sandoval is 6-for-16 with two homers and a double against Maholm. The third baseman has batted .164 with two homers in 55 at-bats this season, but he's also shown more plate discipline (12.7 BB%). The low average is mainly the result of a .171 BABIP, which he's posted despite having a 25.6 percent line-drive rate.
Hunter Pence, RF4/16/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence has recorded 16 hits (5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR) in 52 at-bats (.308) against Paul Maholm of the Dodgers.

Tim Lincecum, SP4/16/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum has walked just one batter and struck out 17 in 15 innings this season, but he has a 7.20 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.
Insight: Lincecum might want to think about throwing more pitches out of the strike zone, however, as batters have crushed his offerings in the zone. Lincecum has a 33.3 percent line-drive rate and a 3.00 HR/9 so far, and batters have made contact on 88.2 percent of swings on pitches in the strike zone.
Brandon Belt, 1BHot4/12/2014 3:13:00 PM

Description: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt hit his fifth homer of the season Tuesday against the Diamondbacks in San Francisco's home opener.
Insight: Belt's first four homers came on the road, so it's good to see him hit one out of power-depressing AT&T Park Tuesday. Just 14 of his 38 career home runs have come at home.
Madison Bumgarner, SP4/5/2014 8:30:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Madison Bumgarner fanned 10 Dodgers in 6 1/3 innings Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Bumgarner only went four innings on Opening Day, though all four runs he gave up were unearned. The left-hander is still just 24 but he has thrown 200+ innings and fanned 191-199 batters in each of the last three seasons.

Buster Posey, C4/5/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey has started off 8-for-21 (.381) with two homers and four RBI.
Insight: Posey hit 24 homers in 148 games when he won the NL MVP in 2012, but he fell to 15 bombs in the same number of games last season. Fantasy owners drafted him for production closer to 2012 this year.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B4/5/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval hit his first homer of the season Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Sandoval has gone 4-for-23 (.174) in his first six games, though he's drawn five walks already. The 27-year-old has never been known for his plate discipline and pitchers know that. Sandoval saw the lowest percentage of pitches in the strike zone of any qualified hitter in the majors last season, and it wasn't even close (33.9 percent for Sandoval, 38.2 percent for Giancarlo Stanton in second place).
Brandon Crawford, SS4/4/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is hitless in 10 at-bats against Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: Crawford is batting .308 through the first four games, but has an unfavorable matchup. Over the past two seasons he's produced below a fantasy-worthy level and should not be on rosters.
Buster Posey, C4/3/2014 1:23:00 PM
Description: Giants catcher Buster Posey is will get the afternoon off on Thursday.
Insight: Normal day game after a night game for the All-Star catcher. he's started well, batting .417 through his first three games. Always a must start when in the lineup.

Tim Lincecum, SP4/2/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum could be scratched from Thursday's start due to food poisoning, according to Kate Scott of KNBR 680.
Insight: Lincecum is also recovering from a bruised knee after he was hit by a comebacker last Friday. The 29-year-old went can still miss bats but he also walks a lot of batters and has been hit hard the last two years. He went 20-29 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, a 383/166 K/BB and a 1.03 HR/9 over 383 2/3 innings in 2012-13.

Description: San Francisco right-hander Tim Lincecum expects to make his scheduled start Thursday versus Arizona. SOURCE: San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Lincecum was struck in the knee by a line drive on Friday but appears to be okay. Though Lincecum isn't as overpowering as he was early in his career, the 29-year-old still eats plenty of innings (197 2/3 IP last season).
Tim Lincecum, SP3/29/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Giants starter Tim Lincecum got drilled by a line drive on Friday night. Luckily, X-rays on his knee came back negative. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area

Description: According to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com, Giants catcher Buster Posey was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to minor hamstring tightness.
Insight: The Giants stressed that the injury is "really, really, really minor." Posey hit .294 with 15 homers, 72 RBI and an .821 OPS in 148 games last year, but fantasy owners who invest a top-50 pick need to get more out of him.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/25/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) had a nerve procedure done on Tuesday and will begin the season on the DL, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Scutaro has been struggling with back pain all spring. It's not a huge loss for fantasy owners, as Scutaro totaled just two homers and 31 RBI last season. The Giants' backup at second base is Joaquin Arias.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B3/25/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval sustained a gash on the palm of his right hand while diving and will miss Wednesday's game, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Sandoval should be OK by Opening Day on March 31. The 27-year-old is coming off a 2013 season in which he hit .278 with 14 homers, 79 RBI and a .758 OPS. Fantasy owners should pay for that production and hope he puts up something closer to the .315 average, 23 home runs and .909 OPS he had in 2011.
Ryan Vogelsong, SPCold3/23/2014 1:58:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong has served up five home runs in 15 innings this spring.
Insight: That's an alarming number for anyone, much less a 36-year-old who was entirely too hittable last season (124 hits, 15 homers, 5.73 ERA in 103 2/3 innings). Vogelsong had a 2.57 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 0.71 HR/9 over his first 315 2/3 innings following his return to the majors after a four-year absence, but he has put up a 6.03 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP and a 1.32 HR/9 his last 150 1/3.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/20/2014 8:37:00 PM
Description: San Francisco second baseman Marco Scutaro was given an epidermal injection on Thursday. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Scutaro has been struggling with back pain all spring and may have to begin the season on the disabled list. It wouldn't be a huge loss for fantasy owners as Scutaro totaled just two homers and 31 RBI last season. The Giants' backup at second base is Tony Abreu (.268, 2 HR, 14 RBI in 2013).
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/17/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) made his Cactus League debut on Monday and went 1-for-2 with a double, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Scutaro has been sidelined by a back injury. He gutted out 127 games last season despite dealing with several injuries and hit .297, but he had just two homers, 31 RBI, 57 runs, two steals and a .726 OPS.
Matt Cain, SPHot3/14/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Matt Cain has made two starts this spring, pitching eight innings and yielding just one hit and striking out nine batters.
Insight: Could this be the return of the Giants ace? After going 8-10 last season with a 4.00 ERA and 1.16 WHIP this spring's ealy work is indicating a big season. We hope so. Keep watching and if this trend continues he could be a bargain on Draft Day.
Michael Morse, OF3/13/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants outfielder Michael Morse will miss four-to-five days with a calf strain.
Insight: The injury has been lingering for Morse, so he'll sit out in hopes that it will go away completely. The slugger played just 88 games last season (76 with Seattle, 12 with Baltimore) due to injuries and hit .215 with 13 home runs and a .651 OPS. However, he batted .296/.345/.516 with 64 homers and 198 RBI in 346 games with the Nationals from 2010-12.
Angel Pagan, CF3/13/2014 8:48:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants center fielder Angel Pagan (lower back strain) could be back in a couple days.
Insight: Pagan's injury apparently isn't serious. He is coming off a season in which he played just 71 games due to a torn hamstring. He hit .282 with five homers, 44 runs and nine steals, one year after producing a .288 average, eight homers, 56 RBI, 95 runs and 29 steals in 154 games.

Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is dealing with a lower back strain.
Insight: Pagan is coming off a season in which he played just 71 games due to a torn hamstring. He hit .282 with five homers, 44 runs and nine steals, one year after producing a .288 average, eight homers, 56 RBI, 95 runs and 29 steals in 154 games. He's awaiting further test results to determine how long he'll be out.
Michael Morse, OF3/13/2014 6:17:00 PM
Description: According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants outfielder Michael Morse will miss a couple of days with a mild calf strain.
Marco Scutaro, 2B3/2/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) has yet to swing a bat this spring, according to csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Scutaro began taking grounders a few days ago. The Giants planned for the 38-year-old infielder to work on strengthening his back, abdominals and hips over the first two weeks of spring training. Scutaro gutted out 127 games last season despite dealing with several injuries and hit .297, but he had just two homers, 31 RBI, 57 runs, two steals and a .726 OPS.
Madison Bumgarner, SP2/25/2014 3:49:00 PM
Description: Madison Bumgarner will be San Francisco's Opening Day starter, according to manager Bruce Bochy.
Insight: This isn't a huge surprise. He was San Francisco's best pitcher last season, going 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA and 199 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings. Even Matt Cain acknowledged that he should get the honor.
Tyler Colvin, RF2/22/2014 7:10:00 PM
Description: The Giants have agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder Tyler Colvin. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Bay Area News Group
Insight: Colvin signed with the Orioles in January but the team pulled out of the deal due to concerns about his back. Baltimore did the same thing after signing Grant Balfour. Both players found another team who thought they were healthy enough to sign, as Balfour inked a deal with Tampa Bay and Colvin with San Francisco. If Colvin makes the team, he will serve as a fifth outfielder and won't have fantasy value.
Pablo Sandoval, 3B1/14/2014 6:28:00 PM
Description: Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval said he has dropped 42 pounds this winter, according to Rafael Rojas of MLB.com.
Insight: Sandoval is in search of a new contract, and GM Brian Sabean said in December the team would be willing to explore an extension with Sandoval provided he shows up to camp in good shape. The Giants third baseman dropped a ton of weight prior to the 2011 season and hit .315 with 23 homers, but he eventually regained everything he lost.
Dontrelle Willis, SP1/10/2014 3:26:00 PM
Description: Starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis and the Giants have reached an agreement on a minor league contract. SOURCE: Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: He still plays? Willis hasn't made more than 15 starts since 2007, which is also the last time he won more than two games in a season. Fantasy owners in need of a reliable arm should keep looking.
Michael Morse, OF12/16/2013 9:11:00 PM
Description: Michael Morse's new deal with San Francisco is worth $6 million. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: He signed a one-year contract last week. Injuries and poor play limited Morse to just 88 games last season (.215, 13 HR, 27 RBI). The 31-year-old is set to be the Giants' Opening Day left fielder.
Ryan Vogelsong, SP11/29/2013 4:31:00 PM
Description: The Giants have re-signed starter Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year deal. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: The contract details haven't been released yet but it's likely he'll be getting less than the $5 million he made last season. Vogelsong (4-6, 5.73 ERA) will join Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Tim Hudson and Madison Bumgarner in the Giants' starting rotation.
Tim Hudson, SP11/18/2013 9:10:00 PM
Description: Tim Hudson became the newest member of the San Francisco Giants on Monday. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: The deal is worth $23 million over two seasons. Hudson had his 2013 campaign cut short because of a broken ankle. He should be ready for spring training in a few months.
Buster Posey, C11/18/2013 1:45:00 PM
Description: San Francisco catcher Buster Posey will not become a full-time first baseman, according to Giants general manager Brian Sabean.
Insight: Posey's fantasy value as a first baseman wouldn't be anywhere near what it is as a catcher. He batted .294 with 15 HR and 72 RBI last season which is very good for a guy behind the plate, but a dime-a-dozen option at first base.
Barry Zito, SP11/2/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: The Giants have declined lefthander Barry Zito's option for next season. SOURCE: Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times
Insight: Zito's tenure in San Francisco will end with a $7 million buyout. He would have made $18 million had the Giants extended him for another year. Zito starred for the Giants during their title run in 2012 (2-0, 1.69 ERA in the playoffs) but wasn't able to keep his rotation spot in 2013.
Tim Lincecum, SP10/22/2013 8:50:00 PM
Description: The Giants have re-signed Tim Lincecum to a two-year deal.
Insight: He'll get $35 million and a full no-trade clause. Lincecum has gone 20-29 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 383 2/3 innings over the last two seasons after going 62-36 with a 2.81 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and two Cy Young Awards from 2008-11. However, he still struck out 190-plus batters in the last two years and lowered his ERA 81 points from 2012 to 2013.
Tim Lincecum, SP10/19/2013 10:34:00 AM
Description: The Giants aren't expected to re-sign starter Tim Lincecum before he becomes a free agent. SOURCE: Andrew Baggarly, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: The Giants are only offering him a two-year deal and Lincecum thinks he may be able to get more than that on the open market. If San Francisco submits a qualifying offer to Lincecum, whatever team signs him will have to surrender a draft pick. Aside from a no-hitter in mid-July, Lincecum didn't have an impressive season (10-14, 4.37 ERA in 32 starts).
