Description: So long, Rick. The Islanders sent goalie Rick DiPietro packing Friday by placing him on waivers.
Insight: DiPietro has only been given three starts this season, losing all three. It looks like the 31-year-old (and owner of one of the most absurd contracts in all of sports) is headed to the minors to play for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Unless you're competing in an AHL fantasy league (do those actually exist?), DiPietro won't be useful in any fantasy formats.

2/19/2013 5:13:00 PM
Description: The Islanders will start Rick DiPietro in net for just the third time this season Tuesday versus Ottawa.
Insight: DiPietro is signed with the Islanders for what seems like an eternity, but injuries have reduced him to a backup goaltender role behind Evgeni Nabokov.

10/14/2011 12:39:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion, which resulted from taking a puck to his facemask during Wednesday's practice. ESPN
Insight: Unreal. Either DiPietro has the worst injury luck imaginable, or he has all the durability of an egg. Hopefully one day he will become completely healthy and provide the Islanders with some return for their 15-year investment. In the meantime, Al Montoya will continue to serve as the Isles' starting goalie, with Evgeni Nabokov likely to see some starts as well.

3/20/2011 4:00:00 AM
Description: DiPietro made 29 saves and got the shootout victory Saturday in his first game since suffering facial fractures in a fight Feb. 2.
Insight: It was his first victory since Jan. 15 and just the eighth of the season for the disappointing netminder. (RapidDraft.com)

3/16/2011 10:00:00 PM
Description: DiPietro was activated from injured reserve Wednesday, where he has sat since Feb. 2 with facial fractures after his face got in the way of a shutout for Pittsburgh's Brent Johnson.
Insight: DiPietro wasn't playing particularly well before the injury, and Al Montoya has been much better since coming over in trade. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for the Islanders to switch back now. (RapidDraft.com)

3/16/2011 11:29:00 AM
Description: The New York Islanders have activated Rick DiPietro from IR and returned Nathan Lawson to Bridgeport of the AHL. New York Islanders
Insight: DiPietro had been sidelined with a fractured cheekbone courtesy of Brent Johnson's fist. Expect the oft-injured goalie to cut into new starter Al Montoya's appearances down the stretch.

2/5/2011 11:00:00 AM
Description: DiPietro is expected to miss four-to-six weeks because of facial fractures and knee swelling suffered in a Wednesday night fight with Pittsburgh's Brent Johnson.
Insight: It's been a tough-luck season for DiPietro on the health front, but the bright side for fantasy owners is that he hasn't been all that good between the pipers. We're not losing much. (RapidDraft.com)

2/4/2011 2:20:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with both facial fractures and knee swelling. New York Islanders
Insight: DiPietro's face was injured after he was one-punched by fellow goalie Brent Johnson near the end of Wednesday's game. This injury doesn't seem like a total surprise, since it is well-known by now that Ricky D has the durability of a glass vase. There is officially no point in keeping him on your roster now. Rookie Kevin Poulin has been officially elevated to starter status, whether he is ready or not.

2/3/2011 12:27:00 PM
Description: The New York Islanders have confirmed that x-rays on Rick DiPietro's face are negative, although they will redo the x-rays to confirm there is no structural damage. TSN
Insight: In a scene that is not common in a hockey game, DiPietro was one-punched by fellow goalie Brent Johnson late in the third period of Wednesday's game. The Isles are probably contemplating keeping their 15-year investment in bubble wrap, considering how brittle he is.

1/27/2011 11:04:00 AM
Description: DiPietro suffered his third straight loss Wednesday, allowing four goals against Carolina.
Insight: It was the second straight four-goal game for DiPietro and the third time in four games since he returned from injury that he yielded at least three. Of course, that's right in line with his season average of 3.42 goals against. (RapidDraft.com)

1/16/2011 12:08:00 AM
Description: Rick DiPietro made 40 saves in the Islanders' 5-3 win over Buffalo on Saturday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: DiPietro was making his return to the Islanders' lineup after injuring his groin during the team's recent five-game road trip. With the Isles' improved play recently, DiPietro may not be such a bad pickup for fantasy teams. Then again, there's always another injury waiting around the corner.

1/7/2011 10:04:00 PM
Description: DiPietro has been ruled out for Saturday's and Sunday's games because of the groin injury he suffered Monday.
Insight: The team sent him back home for treatment while it remains out west. DiPietro has to be considered day to day beyond the weekend, though. (RapidDraft.com)

1/7/2011 5:36:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro is flying back to New York to have his injured groin re-evaluated. Newsday
Insight: If it's not one injury, it's another for the Islanders' franchise player. Groin injuries are always difficult to predict, but you can almost be certain that another trip to IR is forthcoming for Ricky D. Unproven youngsters Nathan Lawson and Kevin Poulin will be counted on to man the Isles' nets in the meantime.

1/4/2011 12:13:00 AM
Description: Rick DiPietro left Monday's game against Calgary for precautionary reasons with an abductor strain. MSG Network
Insight: New backup Nathan Lawson took over between the pipes for the Islanders, who look like they are going to treat their 15-year investment with kid gloves. This injury doesn't appear to be serious, but with Ricky D, you never know.

12/29/2010 11:07:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro stopped 37 of 38 shots he faced in the Islanders' 2-1 shootout win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: DiPietro was instrumental in ending Sidney Crosby's 25-game point streak, although no one probably thought that the point streak would end at the hands of the Islanders. Should you add Ricky D in your fantasy league? Well, he has earned two consecutive wins, which is a start.

12/27/2010 12:18:00 PM
Description: The New York Islanders have activated Rick DiPietro off injured reserve. Newsday
Insight: DiPietro backed up Dwayne Roloson, who led the Isles to a 4-1 win. At least we know his latest injury isn't that serious, and the Isles were likely erring on the side of caution. Another positive for the Isles: they have won four of their last five games.

12/21/2010 4:39:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro is back on injured reserve with swelling in his knee. New York Islanders
Insight: Now there's a surprise. The Islanders will go with veteran Dwayne Roloson and rookie Nathan Lawson while Ricky D is sidelined yet again. Don't even think about adding any Isles goalie to your roster, as it has been nearly impossible for the team to earn wins this season.

12/18/2010 12:44:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro will not start the Islanders' game on Saturday because of swelling in his knee. MSG Network
Insight: As a result, Nathan Lawson will make his NHL debut in goal on Saturday. There is no word as to why Dwayne Roloson won't be starting this game, but the Isles may as well see what they have in Lawson, since they're already playing for next season. As for Ricky D, what else is new.

12/16/2010 11:11:00 PM
Description: Rick DiPietro stopped 30 of 32 shots he faced in the Islanders' 3-2 win over Anaheim on Thursday. Yahoo Sports
Insight: The Islanders won for just the second time in 22 games, with DiPietro earning both wins. His season record improved to 4-6-4 with the win, a better record than that of Dwayne Roloson (2-12-1). Don't be fooled by the win/loss record, as Roloson's goals-against average is a goal better than Ricky D's. Stay well away from either goalie if at all possible.

12/3/2010 8:05:00 AM
Description: DiPietro made only 20 saves in a 6-5 loss to the Rangers on Thursday night.
Insight: DiPietro is now 3-4-4 with a 3.76 GAA in 11 starts this season. (RapidDraft.com)
