3/13/2010 7:34:00 PM
Description: The Browns released Steve Heiden on Friday.
Insight: This news became inevitable once they signed Ben Watson to a contract. Heiden has talent but is injury-prone and has never been able to be a fantasy force. (
10/30/2009 8:20:00 PM
Description: Heiden practiced on a limited basis and is considered questionable to play against the Bears on Sunday.
Insight: Heiden was inactive last week and his little fantasy value. (
10/29/2009 8:27:00 AM
Description: Heiden was limited in practice due to a knee injury.
Insight: Heiden remains questionable to play in Week 8 against the Bears. (
Out10/25/2009 12:04:00 PM
Description: reports that Heiden will not play against the Packers on Sunday.
Insight: Heiden has no fantasy value as he is used primarily as a blocker. (
Out10/18/2009 10:08:00 AM
Description: Heiden has been ruled out of today's matchup with the Steelers because of a knee injury.
Insight: That's no huge loss for fantasy owners, though Heiden did catch five passes and score a touchdown against Cincinnati two weeks ago. Robert Royal is the desperation play here for owners struggling through a bye week. (
9/10/2009 12:32:00 PM
Description: According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Heiden (knee) participated fully in Wednesday's practice despite being listed on the team's injury report.
Insight: Heiden doesn't have much fantasy upside, since he is better known for his blocking and may split time with Robert Royal. Stay away from any Browns' tight end. (
3/4/2009 11:42:00 PM
Description: Cleveland added free-agent tight end Robert Royal to the roster on Wednesday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: This move could be particularly bad news for Heiden. The veteran will turn 33 early next season and has started at least six games every year since 2001. That means there should be plenty of tape by which to evaluate a guy who has reached 40 catches in a season just once. He might have to beat out Royal or intriguing second-year player Martin Rucker to even make the team out of camp. (
2/27/2009 4:06:00 PM
Description: The Browns traded starting tight end Kellen Winslow II to the Buccaneers on Friday, clearing the way for Heiden and others to battle for the job.
Insight: It was Heiden who filled in for the injured Winslow last season, but he'll likely have to battle second-year man Martin Rucker for the top job. The team could also elect to draft or sign a replacement, as Owen Daniels and L.J. Smith -- among others -- float on the free-agent market. Heiden has proved solid when allowed to play, so he could be an end-of-the-draft fantasy option for someone not looking to spend big on the position. (
Out12/16/2008 8:41:00 AM
Description: Heiden was carted off the field early in the second half Monday night after Philadelphia defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley rolled up on his right leg from behind. The injuries to Heiden's knee and ankle have yet to be specified.
Insight: It doesn't look good, though. Heiden is at least expected to miss this week's game and is quite likely done for the year. Darnell Dinkins would start in his place, and rookie Martin Rucker would also see some passing looks. (
10/26/2008 1:36:00 PM
Description: TE Steve Heiden will start in place of Kellen Winslow II this afternoon at Jacksonville. He makes for a decent fantasy option, particularly if you're a Winslow owner in search of a replacement. (
10/23/2008 11:13:00 AM
Description: Heiden will see plenty of downs this week with Winslow missing again.
Insight: Even though the Browns are more of a running team with Winslow out, Heiden showed he can still catch balls as he had 5 catches last week. Expect more of the same this week from Heiden. (
10/14/2008 5:59:00 AM
Description: Heiden caught five passes for 59 yards in place of Kellen Winslow II on Monday night. There's been no word yet on Winslow's prospects going forward.
Insight: Heiden is a decent option in Winslow's stead, especially if the Browns can continue to rediscover passing success. He's not exactly a player to go after with any fervency, though. (
