Texans make it official with Cushing

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Texans made it official Wednesday and announced a contract extension for linebacker Brian Cushing.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports Tuesday indicated Cushing had agreed to a six-year deal worth more than $55 million with $21 million guaranteed. He was entering the final season of a five-year rookie contract.

Cushing's 2012 campaign was cut short after just five games when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Texans' 23-17 victory over the New York Jets on Oct. 8.

The 26-year-old Southern California product helped his club go 5-0 thanks to 30 tackles and one interception. He led the NFL's second-ranked defense with 114 total tackles and added two interceptions during the 2011 season.

Cushing, the 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, has totaled 353 tackles, 9 1/2 sacks and seven interceptions over 49 games, all starts, in his first four seasons.
