Description: Brandon Webb is calling it a career. The former Cy Young winner announced his retirement on Monday.
Insight: Webb hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2009. He'll end his career with a marvelous 3.27 ERA in 199 career appearances. Webb's best season came in 2006 (the year he won the Cy Young award) when he tied for the league-lead in wins (16) and was third in the NL in ERA (3.10).

Description: Brandon Webb took a step forward in his long journey back from shoulder surgery by going seven innings in an Arizona Rookie League game on Tuesday, his longest outing since 2008. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: If he returns to the majors it will be a tremendous feel-good story for Brandon Webb. That does not change the fact that he has minimal fantasy value until he proves he can retire major league hitters on a consistent basis.

Description: Rangers SP Brandon Webb's first opportunity to face live hitters since March 21 didn't go well Monday. He hit three batters and struggled with his location throughout the session Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. "It went bad," Webb said. "I was pretty wild. I'll have to go about it again. I thought I might be ready to get into a game, but after today, there's no way I'm ready to get in a game after that." SOURCE: Star-Telegram
Insight: Webb still has no fantasy value because there is no timetable for his return. If he does make it to a roster this year you are better off letting someone else take the risk on Webb.

Description: Brandon Webb threw long toss today from 200 feet and felt good. SOURCE: BUSTER ONLEY
Insight: He is hoping to throw off a mound soon. It doesn't look like he will make any starts for Texas in April but he should be in their rotation in May.

Description: Brandon Webb was shut down today by the Rangers just before his scheduled live batting practice session after he could not get loose. SOURCE: MLBlogs.Com
Insight: This may just be the Rangers being extremely careful. Wait and see. Everything regarding Webb has been positive thus far in camp.

Description: Webb threw live batting practice Thursday and hopes to see low-level game action soon.
Insight: It's good news whenever this guy takes the mound and leaves it under his own power at this point. Take a late draft chance that Webb will help your team in 2011, and it could pay off. Go in expecting strong value, and you're setting yourself up for disappointment. (

Description: Brandon Webb threw a 62 pitch live batting practice session today. Webb is healthy and continues to progress after missing the last two seasons due to injury. SOURCE:
Insight: Watch Webb as he continues his comeback. He has huge potential in AL only leagues, and right now would be worth a late round flier. It would be unrealistic of course to expect a CY Young year from Webb in 2011; but don't sleep on him in the later rounds if he continues to progress.

Description: Brandon Webb threw a good 54-pitch side session today. SOURCE:MLBLOGS
Insight: He will continue to throw side sessions for now and then face live batters next week. The Rangers are taking it slow - don't be surprised to see him start the year on the DL.

Description: Rangers P Brandon Webb was impressive in another bullpen session but is not yet ready to pitch in a game. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: At this rate, Webb will not be ready to pitch in a game until May or June, since he can't seem to get stretched out. With the Rangers trying Neftali Feliz in the rotation it would be interesting to see if the Rangers have thought about making Webb the closer. He would not need to stretch his arm out for longer outings and he would pitch fewer innings, which could minimze his risk of injury.

Description: Brandon Webb will throw long-toss again today and then the Rangers will decide on the date of his first bullpen session. SOURCE: MLB
Insight: It will likely be early next week. Webb is still an unknown for the start of the season but his progress has been good so far.

Description: Texas manager Ron Washington used the word "wow" to describe Brandon Webb's long toss session yesterday. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: Only in February is that word used to describe long toss! Webb still has a long way to go to be ready for opening day. His sinker could be effective in Texas if he is healthy but that's a big "if".
2/24/2011 8:27:00 PM
Description: Brandon Webb had a "heavy" long toss session today in which he threw from 60 to 65 pitches. He is scheduled to throw off the mound Sunday or Monday if he continues to progress. SOURCE: ESPN.COM
Insight: Webb is a High risk/High Reward guy and could definitely help your team out this year, If his arm strength returns and he pitches like Webb of old. Get him late and he could be the steal of your draft.
2/24/2011 3:05:00 PM
Description: reports that Webb threw 60 pitches from flat ground Thursday without issue and could be back on the mound by the end of the weekend.
Insight: As worrisome as Webb's early-camp shoulder woes are, it's important to remember that we're still more than a month from the start of the season. There's a point late in fantasy drafts at which Webb still makes some sense. (
2/24/2011 1:15:00 PM
Description: Rangers manager Ron Washington was excited by what he saw from Brandon Webb's "heavy" long toss session on Thursday. "Wow," Washington said. "The ball was coming out of his hand really good. The arm strength is picking up." SOURCE:
Insight: Don't be too excited since this was just long toss. Until he proves he is fully healthy, Webb is just a risky pick for AL-only leagues.
2/22/2011 6:54:00 PM
Description: Brandon Webb hopes to throw off a mound on Monday. SOURCE: JEFF WILSON
Insight: He he responds to that session will determine his course of action in the spring and availability for the start of the season. Next week is a big one for him.
2/21/2011 10:01:00 AM
Description: The Rangers have halted Webb's mound work because of soreness in his repaired throwing shoulder.
Insight: That's obviously bad news for a big injury risk who has barely played over the past two seasons. There's certainly plenty of time for Webb to get through it, but fantasy owners have little reason to believe he navigate the season without issues. Webb is a very late flier at best. (
1/4/2011 8:16:00 AM
Description: Brandon Webb hopes to be ready for opening day but won't rush himself into the season. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: He is a late round mixed league pick right now with the potential to rise if he looks good in spring training. Just don't go overboard and expect a fully healthy season from him.
12/27/2010 9:07:00 AM
Description: Brandon Webb has agreed to a one-year deal with Texas. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: He still has to pass his physical and that is a legitimate obstacle with him. Assuming he passes it, Texas isn't a great landing spot for him - the NL would have been better. But, he is a groundball pitcher so the home run factor in Arlington might not affect him too much.
12/20/2010 2:22:00 PM
Description: The Cubs and Rangers have been the most aggressive suitors of Brandon Webb. SOURCE: BILL LADSON
Insight: The Rangers make a lot of sense because they have a win-now philosophy and just lost Cliff Lee. But, the Cubs aren't afraid to spend either. The Nationals are also in the mix.
12/17/2010 8:10:00 PM
Description: Brandon Webb is expected to sign with a team in the coming days. SOURCE: ED PRICE
Insight: His value will remain pretty minimal until we see him in action in spring training. However, the amount of money he gets will be a signal of how confident major league teams are in his health.
