Owners were expecting a spike in Jay Bouwmeester's production with a move to a stronger team.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
One of the unofficial holidays on the hockey fan calendar has come and gone with players from every corner of the NHL grid changing addresses after Deadline Day 2009. It got off to a bit of a slow start, but a flurry of late moves certainly made things interesting. Not all of it was the good kind of interesting either. So, what does this mean for your fantasy squad? Let's take a look:
Olli Jokinen from Phoenix to Calgary -- A great move for Jokinen owners and the Calgary Flames. Jokinen finally finds himself on a team that can help him shoulder the load, while Calgary gets a guy who helps make them a very difficult team to match up against. Whether Jokinen plays with All-Star winger Jarome Iginla or not, Jokinen's numbers will spike whether it is due to playing with a wing the caliber of Iginla, something Olli has never had, or getting to line up on the second line and not seeing the opponents top defense pairing. And pairing him with his old coach Mike Keenan, who was responsible for Jokinen's development in Florida, can only help.
Bill Guerin from New York Islanders to Pittsburgh Penguins -- After sitting around for a few days and being rumored to be dealt to every contender in the league, Guerin ended up in Pittsburgh looking to help right a ship that has begun to take on water. Still, even though it is taking on water, it is still sailing, as opposed to the ship that is the New York Islanders. Guerin isn't the scorer he once was, but his scoring pace should pick up slightly. More importantly, he should help some of the struggling Pens get their scoring back on track.
Mark Recchi from Tampa Bay to Boston -- If getting out of Tampa Bay wasn't enough for Recchi, he gets the added bonus of heading to the best team in the East. Recchi seems to be on the move every year at this time, on his way to a contender to help them make a push for the Cup (of which he has two), so organizations know he is a player that can help a team at this time of year. The transition from Tampa to Boston will do wonders for Recchi's numbers and games.
Eric Cole from Edmonton to Carolina -- Languishing away in Edmonton for the past few months, Cole barely resembles the player he was a mere 12 months ago, so going back to Carolina where he had success playing on a line with Eric Staal should be just what the doctor ordered. His impact may not be felt immediately, but next season expect to see the Cole of old.
Scottie Upshall Philadelphia to Phoenix -- While Upshall will see his role and ice time increase now that he is in the desert, his production will drop going from the team with the seventh-best goals-per-game average to a team with the 26th-best goals-per-game, who, by the way, just traded their best all around player. Same for Matthew Lombardi who came over to Phoenix from Calgary in the Jokinen deal.
Jay Bouwmeester staying in Florida -- As far as a hockey move, this is a win for Florida, who get to keep their best player and make a legit run at the playoffs. From a fantasy stand point, though, this is a loss for Jay Bo who could have gone to a team that would have surrounded him with better talent and improved his numbers. His fantasy stock could still improve this summer if he does not resign in South Beach, but for the remainder of this season, Jay Bo's value will stay the same.
Pascal LeClaire from Columbus to Ottawa -- And the Senators game of musical goal crease continues. LeClaire will be the fourth different goaltender to get a chance to be the No.1 in Ottawa this season alone. It was only a year ago that LeClaire posted a 2.25 goals against average and a .919 save percentage for the Jackets and looked like a guy they could build off of. So why is he a draw? Because LeClaire has had problems with injuries throughout his brief career, so you can't count on him being good for your team if he is constantly making the trip to IR. If he can stay healthy though, he could be good for Ottawa and good for fantasy owners.
