Ryan Grant disappointed fantasy owners in 2008 despite rushing for 1,203 yards.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
One look at last year's top running backs and a comparison with the first "RapidDraft ADP" report shows one back in particular is getting very little respect so far.
Green Bay's Ryan Grant disappointed fantasy owners in 2008 despite rushing for 1,203 yards, good for ninth overall, but just four scores.
Unfortunately, Grant was coming off a "monster" second half in 2007 (770 yards rushing, eight TDs over the final eight games) and expectations were extremely high.
When the Packers' offense ended up being "pass first and run second" behind first-year starter Aaron Rodgers, Grant's fantasy owners suffered the consequences. He finished the season just 25th in points among running backs.
So Grant's 2009 ADP has dropped almost 10 positions to 30.8.
I see a lot of things to like about Grant this season, particularly if I can get him at the end of the third round or the start of the fourth.
First off, Grant got off to a slow start in 2008 because a) he held out and missed a large portion of training camp and b) he suffered from hamstring problems throughout the first half of the regular season.
Secondly, Grant and the entire offensive line struggled with the all-out zone blocking scheme of 2008 which Coach Mike McCarthy said they would move away from this year. The team finished ranked 17th in rushing with just 112 yards-per-game and a "middle-of-the-pack" 4.1 yards-per-carry average.
Third, now that Rodgers has established himself as a solid quarterback, defenses will be less likely to crowd the line as they did at the start of 2008. It could mean more room to run for Grant.
Fourth, Rodgers took a beating last year and the coaches would probably like to keep him healthier, therefore establishing a running game should be higher on their list of objectives.
Given these reasons, I think drafting Grant at No.30 makes him an undervalued commodity and definitely worth the pick.
