Santonio Holmes should see more targets in the upcoming season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
There is a lot to like, dislike and be concerned about, when considering drafting Pittsburgh wide Receiver Santonio Holmes.
Let's start with the good stuff.
In last year's Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium, Santonio Holmes was magnificent, catching nine balls for 131 yards and the game-winning touchdown. It was the crowning touch to a solid postseason in which he scored three times, twice on receptions and once on a 67-yard punt return.
During the regular season Holmes continued to progress, catching 55 balls (the most of his career) for 821 yards and five scores. He has become a reliable target for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the team's most potent deep threat.
He'll likely see even more targets in the upcoming season now that No.3 receiver Nate Washington jumped ship to play in Tennessee. Which is exactly what he and his fantasy owners are hoping for.
"I tell my coaches, 'If you can give me six catches in a game, or at least eight opportunities, I am going to give you 100 yards and a touchdown," said Holmes recently.
Add in Hines Ward coming off shoulder surgery and a sprained MCL and being 33- years-old and it's very possible that Holmes could be the "star" of the Steelers' passing offense in 2009-10.
Pittsburgh is still a run-first offense and that's not likely to change anytime soon. They still have Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore at running back and get 2008 first-round draft pick (No.23 overall) Rashard Mendenhall back from the injured reserve list.
Roethlisberger is a great quarterback in real life, but as a fantasy QB, he's really only had one good season - 2007. In that year he threw for 3,154 yards and 32 TDs against just 11 interceptions. His two Super Bowl rings attest to his leadership, but he's just an average fantasy signal caller.
In February, Holmes was charged with a marijuana misdemeanor from an October traffic stop. Although prosecutors dropped the charge in early June because of a lack of probable cause, Commissioner Roger Goodell could still take some kind of action.
Evaluation - Currently, his overall "RapidDraft ADP" number is 58.5 making him around a sixth-round selection. He certainly has the talent to be a bargain at that price, it's just a question of how much the Steelers will use him. I think he'll post 70 receptions for 980 yards and seven scores in 2009.
