Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Last night at Madison Square Garden "Lin Fever" hit an all-time high as the second-year guard posted a career-high 38 points with four rebounds and seven assists in the Knicks 92-85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.
Almost every Internet site/newspaper/radio and television station had a headline that screamed Lin out-duels Kobe Bryant. And while the two players did lead their respective teams in scoring, Lin did most of his damage against 37-year-old Derek Fisher and journeyman backup Steve Blake, not against the 14-time All-Star and nine-time NBA All-Defensive team.
That's not to take away from what the un-drafted Harvard alum has done in his first three NBA starts. Lin is averaging 29.7 ppg, 8.3 apg and 3.3 rpg since being installed as the Knicks starting point guard three games ago. It's just to give you the correct perspective of his accomplishments. So far, Lin has lined up against Devin Harris, John Wall and Fisher...not exactly a trio of defensive specialists.
If you were smart/lucky enough to claim Lin off waivers when I first wrote a note on January 6th telling fantasy owners to stash him on their bench, you would be smiling from ear-to-ear today.
So pay attention once again. If you listened to me then, hear me now - before the last week in February, you should trade Lin while his fantasy value is unrealistically high.
Lin has good matchups over the next week, with the Knicks scheduled to play Minnesota, Toronto, Sacramento and New Orleans, but come the end of the month New York's schedule gets much tougher. Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Boston and San Antonio are among the games at the end of this month/start of March and Lin will likely not be able to reach his current heights against those teams.
And the return of Carmelo Anthony (about a week away) and Amar'e Stoudemire (should return on Monday) will dramatically reduce Lin's shot opportunities.
So the strategy is to start and enjoy Lin's performances for the next week to 10 days and trade him right around Presidents Day. Sooner if you see too much "Melo" and Stoudemire in the box score.
In my Yahoo league, Lin ranked No.15 overall this past week, No.6 among point guards due to the fact that he is a bit turnover prone (4.0 per game). But that shouldn't stop you from asking top dollar for the new Knicks hero.
Someone will take the bait of his recent success and offer you too much in return. Take it and you will end up with a player who can help carry your team to the fantasy championship.
