It appears that Aaron Brooks will be more of a pure point guard from now on.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Aaron Brooks has been a very good fantasy story this season, coming from virtually nowhere to play a solid role as a fantasy point guard. But the ride may be coming to an abrupt end and the Tuesday night box score is likely an example of what to expect down the stretch.
Brooks was one of the bright spots on an unknown roster when the season began without center Yao Ming (19.7 ppg in 2008-09), swingman Tracy McGrady (15.6 ppg) and Ron Artest (17.1 ppg). With most of the team's scoring missing or traded, it was anybody's guess where the scoring would come from.
The third-year guard out of Oregon quickly became the team's best fantasy option. He along with starter Luis Scola and sixth-man Carl Landry were valuable fantasy commodities. Brooks led the team in scoring 27 times and in assists 31 times. Scola led the team in scoring nine times and rebounding 33 times and Landry led the team in points on 16 occasions and rebounding eight times.
However, at the trade deadline, Houston packaged a deal that sent Landry to Sacramento for talented shooting guard Kevin Martin.
As a fantasy owner of Brooks, I worried what effect Martin would have on Brooks, but through the first few games, little changed. In the 10 games Martin has been with the team, Brooks and Martin have each led the team in scoring five times.
Last night however, was the first game back for previously injured Trevor Ariza and Kyle Lowry. Ariza had been averaging 15.4 ppg before injuring his hip and missing most of the games in which Martin played.
With all these guys on the floor, particularly with the return of Ariza, it appears as if Brooks is the backcourt guy who will give up many of his shots. He took just 13 shots last night as compared to an average of 20.2 in the previous nine games. And he shot 5-for-13, so it wasn't like he was completely off his game.
No, it appears that Brooks will be more of a pure point guard from now on, instead of the combination point/shooting guard he has been for most of the season.
So if you are expecting, and depending, upon him to put up almost 20 points-a- night, I'm afraid you and I are going to be disappointed with his performance down the home stretch.
