It doesn't look very good for a quick return for Ryan Braun.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
It seems like an unusual number of players went down with injuries over the weekend which may have a big impact on your fantasy squads.
Start off with Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun (back). The slugger was kept out of the lineup on Sunday after leaving Saturday's game early and it doesn't look very good for a quick return.
On Sunday Braun said: "It's definitely not good. There's no way I can swing a bat today."
Fortunately for the Brewers they were playing the Nationals and got by without his big bat. But if they are going to make a run at the division they will need the NL Player of the Month for July in the lineup. If you have him on your roster there is no one who can replace him. Gabe Kapler took his position in left field and homered on Sunday, but he is hardly a viable replacement for Braun.
Carl Crawford went 2-for-4 on Saturday, but an injured tendon in the middle finger of his right hand has sent him and his 25 stolen bases to the disabled list. His position in the Rays lineup was taken by Rocco Baldelli, but that won't help you in the stolen base category.
Brad Lidge has been held out the last couple of days in Philadelphia and his Friday outing saw him give up a hit and two walks. They are calling it a "sluggish" shoulder, but he is expected to be available on Monday.
The likely American League Rookie-of-the-Year, Evan Longoria (.278, 56 runs, 22 HR, 71 RBI), was hit on the right wrist by J.J. Putz in Thursday night's game. He hasn't played since. He is listed as questionable for Tuesday's game against Oakland. Willy Aybar played third base over the weekend and hit two homers while knocking in four runs.
Inning-eater Tim Wakefield is headed to the DL with shoulder tightness. Wakefield was 7-8, but had a solid 3.67 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. His Tuesday spot will be taken by a call-up from Pawtucket, likely Michael Bowden or Devern Hansack, but neither is a pickup candidate.
You waited all year for pitcher Chris Carpenter to make his return and in his first couple of outings he pitched pretty well. But he left Sunday night's game against Chicago complaining of a mild strain of the right triceps. Another trip to the DL is not out of the question.
Orlando Hudson was hitting a solid .305 with 54 runs scored, eight homers and 41 RBI for Arizona, but had season-ending surgery to repair a dislocated bone in his wrist. His replacement is Augie Ojeda, who should not be on anyone's fantasy team.
Others seeking medical attention over the weekend included: Andruw Jones OF Dodgers, Scott Hairston OF San Diego, Freddy Sanchez 2B Pittsburgh, Jack Wilson SS Pittsburgh and Marcus Thames OF Detroit.
