In 116 at-bats this season, David Ortiz has yet to hit a homer.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Is there anything worse than drafting a power hitter and not getting any power from him? Maybe drafting a strikeout pitcher and not getting any K's, but at least you only have to see that boxscore once every fifth day. With a hitter in a power slump, you are reminded every day of your error.
Thus far this season, there have been some astonishing totals for a number of supposed "power hitters."
While Carlos Pena (13) and Albert Pujols (12) lead their respective leagues in home runs, the other end of the spectrum is surprising.
At the top of my list is Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz. In 116 at-bats, the left-handed slugger has yet to hit a homer, has just 14 RBIs and is hitting a "robust" .224. This is from a man who has averaged 38.5 homers per season in his six years in Boston.
But Ortiz is not alone in disappointing fantasy owners.
Bobby Abreu, the former Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees star, is now not hitting home runs for the Los Angeles Angels. He has yet to connect in 110 at-bats. At least Abreu is hitting .309 and stealing bases (12).
Or how about the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year, Geovany Soto. He hit 23 home runs last year and has not hit one out of Wrigley or any other park in 2009.
Other players who you would expect to hit a few home runs and have yet to hit even one "long ball" in 2009 include: Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, James Loney and BJ Upton.
There is also a list of players who have hit just one home run, who under normal circumstances would be expected to have hit more.
Pat Burrell, who hit 33 home runs in 2008 and helped bring a World Championship to Philadelphia, signed with Tampa Bay over the off-season, but has yet to provide the Rays with much power. Without help from Burrell and Upton, the Rays are off to a slow start (15-18) despite Evan Longoria and Pena's hard work.
Adrian Beltre, Alexei Ramirez, Ty Wigginton, Kevin Kouzmanoff, 2008 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia and Jhonny Peralta are also on the "one home run list."
Who would have expected that?
Below you will find a list of players with no more than one home run who were expected to contribute to your team's fantasy total.
