Tulane cut its deficit in half later in the first quarter when Darkwa ran in a two-yard touchdown, but Metheny struck again less than three minutes later with a 30-yard scoring strike to Davin Hawkins.
South Alabama added to its advantage early in the second quarter on another Metheny rushing touchdown, this time from 12 yards out.

Darkwa converted a one-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to bring the Green Wave's deficit to five, then they took a 33-31 lead later in the frame following a 40-yard touchdown toss from Montana to Grant.
The Jaguars shifted the momentum in their favor late in the third quarter when Terrance Timmons recovered a blocked punt and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown.
A 23-yard field goal off the foot of Sunanon with 6:07 left in the game gave South Alabama an eight-point cushion, 41-33.
The Green Wave capped off a 15-play, 82-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Montana to Grant with 1:19 left to bring them to within two, but they failed to tie the game on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt.
