Final Score: Ball State 40, Army 14
Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Keith Wenning threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns as he helped guide the Ball State Cardinals to a 40-14 win over the Army Black Knights in non-conference action at Scheumann Stadium.
Wenning converted 23-of-32 passes, while running back Horactio Banks ran for 51 yards and scored twice on 17 carries for the Cardinals (2-0) in the home win.
The Black Knights (1-1), winners of their season opener against Morgan State last week (28-12), were paced by Larry Dixon who ran for a game-high 107 yards and scored twice on 14 rushing attempts. Quarterbacks Angelo Santiago and A.J. Shurr combined to hit on 7-of-19 passes for 76 yards in the setback.
Army scored the first points of the afternoon when Dixon raced 71 yards to the end zone on the very first possession. Dixon also scored on a nine-yard run in the third quarter as well, but in between the Cardinals generated 37 points of their own to put the game out of reach with ease.
The BSU assault began with a 10-yard TD run by Banks at the 10:45 mark of the opening frame. The Cardinals took the lead, 14-7, with an eight-yard TD pass between Wenning and Jamill Smith to cap a 10-play, 76-yard drive.
In the second quarter kicker Scott Secor knocked through field goals of 47 and 34 yards, followed by a six-yard TD run by Banks to push the Ball State advantage to 27-7 at the break.
The Cardinals continued to pile on in the third period with a 19-yard field goal by Secor and an 11-yard TD pass from Wenning to Zane Fakes.
With under two minutes remaining in the third the Knights were able to finish off a 13-play, 56-yard drive with Dixon's second score of the day, but by then it was too little, too late.
Secor's 20-yard field goal at the 12:21 mark of the fourth left the hosts with the overwhelming 26-point victory.
Army, which lost to the Cardinals last season, 30-22, generated 388 yards rushing, compared to 128 for BSU. Last season the Black Knights led the nation with 369.8 ypg on the ground.
