National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Atlanta
(Saturday, July 19)
Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Atlanta 1
Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Rollins' two-run homer in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Philadelphia Phillies took a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.
Phillies starter Cole Hamels (4-5) was outstanding through seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in the win.
Grady Sizemore went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Marlon Byrd and Domonic Brown each collected two hits for the Phillies, who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Braves and halted their three-game losing skid overall.
Hamels had little trouble with the Atlanta lineup in the early going, carrying a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings, but Tommy La Stella split the gap in left center for a double to give the Braves their first hit. The southpaw didn't give in, however, striking out Christian Bethancourt on three pitches to end the frame.
"I thought he had an opportunity to throw a no-hitter the way his stuff was," Rollins said of Hamels. "He was throwing his cutter well. His fastball was good."
Pinch-hitter Tyler Pastornicky singled to right to lead off the sixth, but Hamels picked him off first before punching out B.J. Upton and retiring Andrelton Simmons on a fly to right to keep the game scoreless.
Sizemore legged out a one-out double to right center and Rollins chased him home with his 12th homer of the season, a drive to right off Shae Simmons (1-1), to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.
Justin Upton doubled with one out in the home seventh and scored two batters later on Chris Johnson's two-out double to center.
"He threw the ball well," Justin Upton said of Hamels. "He beat us. You just have to regroup and come back tomorrow."
Byrd reached on an infield single to start the eighth, then advanced to second on Cody Asche's sacrifice bunt. Brown proceeded to chop a base hit under the glove of Johnson at third to put runners at the corners with one down.
Anthony Varvaro maneuvered his way out of the jam, though, as he got Cameron Rupp to strike out looking and pinch-hitter Ben Revere to ground out to second, keeping it a one-run game.
Ken Giles came on to pitch the eighth and struck out two before Rupp erased B.J. Upton while trying to steal second for the third out in the inning.
Jonathan Papelbon needed only five pitches to work the ninth for his 23rd save of the season.
Braves left-hander Chasen Shreve made his major-league debut with two outs in the seventh, striking out Ryan Howard to end the inning ... Atlanta had its three-game win streak overall snapped in the setback ... Braves starter Aaron Harang limited the Phillies to five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings ... Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick will oppose Alex Wood in Sunday's finale.
