Brandon Marshall is a proven fantasy stud, who posted 101 receptions last season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Reports out of Miami have the Dolphins trading for talented, but disruptive, Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall. This trade, if true, would have a huge effect on fantasy player values in both Denver and Miami.
Marshall is a proven fantasy stud, who posted 101 receptions last season for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's not a "one-year wonder" as he has cracked the 100-catch mark in each of the past three seasons with two different quarterbacks.
The deal will give a major boost to Dolphins' quarterback Chad Henne's fantasy value. To get an idea of Henne's increased value, one just has to look at how Kyle Orton improved when he was traded from the Chicago Bears to the Broncos. Orton threw 76 more passes in 2009 for 830 more yards and three more touchdowns. Meanwhile, Jay Cutler, who went in the opposite direction, threw 61 fewer times for 860 fewer yards.
Henne was already a much improved quarterback at the end of 2009 as his second half of the season numbers show. If you evenly split Henne's 14 games, you'll see that he threw for 1,168 yards in the first seven games (166.8 yards-per- game) and 1,710 yards in the final seven contests (244.3 yards-per-game). Now mix in a 100-catch, 1,200-yard receiver and Henne's ADP (Average Draft Position) should rise like a helium-filled balloon. His "before-the-trade" ADP is 160.0 and it will be interesting to see how far it rises in the next few days and weeks.
On the other hand, Miami's two best receivers, Davone Bess (ADP 158.3) and Ted Ginn Jr. (ADP 160.7) should see their numbers drop precipitously.
In Denver, Orton's numbers will obviously fall with the loss of his No.1 target. The new receiving corps looks like Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Stokley...not exactly a group which will instill much fantasy interest.
The trading of Marshall may indicate that the Broncos will emphasize the running game more than last year with second-year running back Knowshon Moreno and veteran Correll Buckhalter. Both could see their value rise.
