Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
You will probably hear a lot about Jorge Posada's hitting problems this week...and his lack of desire to play in Saturday night's contest against the Boston Red Sox after being dropped to ninth in the batting order.
But Posada isn't the only Yankees hitter who has lost his way at the plate.
Remember in 2009 when there was all that talk about Yankees Stadium being a home run heaven and everyone commenting on the perceived "wind tunnel" heading out to right field?
There is not much of that kind of conversation in 2011 as the Bronx Bombers are averaging more runs on the road (5.6), than at home (4.7).
Their offensive numbers are bad over the past two weeks. Since May 1st, the Yankees have been averaging just 4.0 runs-per-game, winning five and losing eight games. Which means the popular strategy of drafting and playing as many Yankees as possible has left you in a bind.
Three Yankees regulars are ranked in the Sports Network's "Cold" listing - Russell Martin, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano.
Martin started the season in blazing fashion, but over the past two weeks has an OPS of just 0.529. His average has dipped 47 points since the calendar turned to May and he has just a single homer and three RBIs. "A-Rod" is batting just .200 with an OPS of 0.519 since May 1st. Meanwhile, the best fantasy second baseman in the league, Cano, is batting .186 with an OPS of 0.558 over the same span.
In fact, no Yankees starter is batting above .281 (Granderson) and as a team they are batting .247 for the month of May. Which probably explains why management didn't think they could afford to leave Posada and his .165 batting average in the middle of the order.
The Yankees batting order will come around, so I'm not telling you to trade Mark Teixeira, Rodriguez, Cano or Granderson. But the borderline fantasy starters (Martin, Derek Jeter, Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher, Posada), who used to benefit from being around the big sluggers, should find a spot on your bench until the stars have turned it around.
