Gregg's Fantasy Value

Kevin Gregg should compete with Jason Frasor and Scott Downs for the closing job.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It was announced yesterday that former Chicago Cubs closer Kevin Gregg signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. That's the best any fantasy owner could hope for, because it at least gives Gregg a chance to close again.

Of the three clubs who were looking at Gregg, only one, Toronto gave him even a remote chance of regularly pitching the ninth inning.

Gregg had been in contact with Colorado and San Diego as well as the Blue Jays, but with Huston Street (4-1, 35 saves, 3.06 ERA, 0.908 WHIP) pitching well in Denver and Heath Bell (6-4, 42 saves, 2.71 ERA, 1.120 WHIP) solidly entrenched as the Padres closer, north of the border held the best and only chance for Gregg to have fantasy value in 2010.

Gregg should compete with Jason Frasor and Scott Downs for Toronto's closing job this spring. My guess is that Frasor will get the initial shot in the "starring" role, but should he faulter, whoever between Downs and Gregg is pitching better at the time will get the nod.

Unfortunately, that means a long wait for an opportunity and therefore Gregg should not be a Draft Day selection.
