Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Mean Green's hopes of winning the Conference USA West Division title were crushed as Eric Soza passed for 274 yards and rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners to a 21-13 victory over North Texas at Apogee Stadium.
Soza completed 30-of-49 pass attempts for 274 yards and was intercepted once while under center for UTSA (6-5, 5-2 C-USA) as it became bowl eligible for the first time in program history. Evans Okatcha added 104 yards on 16 carries while Cole Hubble reeled in three receptions for a team-high 62 yards. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Roadrunners.
Derek Thompson finished 26-of-46 passing for 229 yards with one touchdown and an interception for the Mean Green (7-4, 5-2). Darnell Smith made 13 receptions for 115 yards and Brandin Byrd tallied 52 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Lairamie Lee anchored UNT's defense with 12 total tackles.
The only points of the opening period came courtesy of a 40-yard touchdown run by Kam Jones, which gave the Roadrunners a 7-0 lead just over three minutes after kickoff.
UNT finally put some points on the board in the opening minute of the second stanza as Zach Paul converted a 44-yard field goal attempt.
UTSA extended its lead at the 6:49 mark of the third quarter as Soza scored on a two-yard run to conclude a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
The Mean Green made it a one-possession game at the 13:35 mark of the fourth quarter as Paul chipped in a 21-yard field goal attempt. UTSA answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that it concluded with a 10-yard run into the end zone by Soza.
UNT narrowed the deficit with just under six minutes left in regulation as Thompson completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Drew Miller. After UTSA missed a field goal on its next drive, the Mean Green took over at their own 29-yard line with one final chance to even the score. Thompson led the offense down to UTSA's 3-yard line, but he was intercepted by Bennett Okotcha on first-and- goal on the last play of the contest.
The Roadrunners amassed 458 yards of total offense and limited UNT to 334 total yards. The loss snapped the Mean Green's five-game winning streak and gave them their second C-USA loss, which took them out of the race for the divisional crown.
