Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain allowed no runs in seven innings on Saturday after allowing six and seven earned runs, respectively, in his previous two outings.
Insight: The schizophrenic Cain (1-6, 4.38 ERA, 1.231 WHIP) is impossible to predict these days as he goes from horrible to very good and back again.

Cold6/24/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain allowed six runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings Monday against the Padres.
Insight: It's not a good sign for Cain that he couldn't shut down the Padres, who have the worst offense in baseball. The right-hander has allowed 17 earned runs on 20 hits in 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts and now has a 4.82 ERA, though his WHIP remains a solid 1.24.

6/6/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: He missed a couple turns in the rotation because of a strained hamstring. Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) will get the ball Friday against New York. He hasn't faced the Mets yet in 2014 but Cain was 0-1 against them with a 3.24 ERA in two starts last season.

6/4/2014 5:57:00 PM
Description: Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) will return to the rotation Friday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) went on the disabled list a few days ago after determining he wouldn't be able to start on Saturday, though the move was retroactive to his last start on May 22 so he's eligible to come off it already.

5/30/2014 6:18:00 PM
Description: Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) won't start Saturday, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday without any issues and appeared to be ready to go, but the Giants will keep him out for a second straight start due to a hamstring strain. Yusmeiro Petit will make another start in his place.

Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) missed his scheduled appearance Monday because of a strained hamstring but was able to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday without any issues. Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 5.08 ERA) would start Saturday if Cain can't get clearance.

5/28/2014 2:05:00 PM
Description: According to Amy Gutierrez of csnbayarea.com, Giants starter Matt Cain (hamstring) is ready to start Saturday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday without any issues. He strained his hamstring on May 21 at Colorado.

5/27/2014 8:23:00 PM
Description: According to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com, Giants starter Matt Cain (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday.
Insight: If everything goes well, Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) is expected to start Saturday. He strained his hamstring on May 21 at Colorado.

5/25/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: As expected, San Francisco right-hander Matt Cain will not start Monday against the Cubs. SOURCE: Henry Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Yusmeiro Petit (3-1, 4.76 ERA) will start in his place. Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) strained his hamstring in his previous start and could be headed to the DL for the second time this season.

5/24/2014 9:08:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain had his bullpen session cut short on Saturday. SOURCE: San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA) suffered a hamstring strain earlier this week and he's clearly not 100 percent. He's supposed to pitch Monday against Chicago but that's looking pretty unlikely at this point.

5/22/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. He's hoping to avoid the disabled list. SOURCE: Alex Pavlovic, Mercury News
Insight: Cain grabbed his right hamstring on his last pitch of the third inning Wednesday at Colorado and was grimacing as he walked off the mound. He's been inconsistent at best and his 1-3 record is indicative of that.

5/21/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain left Wednesday's start with a strained right hamstring, according to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com.
Insight: Cain grabbed his right hamstring on his last pitch of the third inning and was grimacing as he walked off the mound. Yusmeiro Petit took over for him in the next inning and would likely take his spot in the rotation if he has to go on the disabled list.

5/10/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain gave up two runs on three hits with four walks in five innings in his return to the rotation Saturday at Los Angeles.
Insight: Cain had to endure a two-week stay on the disabled list after cutting his finger with a kitchen knife. The right-hander's K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 all declined from 2012 to 2013 and they have again from last year to this year. Through 36 innings, Cain is 0-3 with a 4.25 ERA and a 29/14 K/BB in 36 innings.

Description: San Francisco starter Matt Cain has been cleared to pitch Saturday against Los Angeles. SOURCE: Mark Saxon, ESPN Los Angeles
Insight: He had to endure a two-week stay on the disabled list after cutting his finger with a kitchen knife. With Cain returning, Yusmeiro Petit (2-1, 5.04 ERA) will be dropped from the starting rotation.

5/5/2014 5:46:00 PM
Description: The Giants expect right-hander Matt Cain to return Saturday against the Dodgers. He was placed on the DL yesterday with a lacerated finger, though the move was made retroactive to April 24th. SOURCE: Hank Schulman, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: The Giants have a habit of overworking their starters and that's certainly been the case with Cain. After throwing 200+ innings in six straight seasons between 2007 and 2012, Cain looked shot last year, slumping to a 4.00 ERA in 30 appearances. He hasn't gotten off to a great start in 2014 (0-3, 4.35 ERA) and it's possible the 29-year-old has already peaked. We don't have much confidence in Cain going forward.

5/4/2014 9:16:00 PM
Description: The Giants have placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24, with a lacerated finger.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) was scratched from last Tuesday's start due to the injury and wasn't going to be ready to go Monday against the Pirates, so the team had to make a move. They were able to back-date it to April 24, so Cain shouldn't have to miss another start. Yusmeiro Petit is expected to get the ball Monday, according to Andrew Baggarly of csnbayarea.com.

4/29/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain has been scratched from his start on Tuesday's due to a cut on his right index finger, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) won't need stitches and should be ready to start when his next turn comes up. Yusmeiro Petit will start in his place on Tuesday against San Diego.

4/23/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Giants starter Matt Cain was roughed up by the Rockies on Wednesday at Coors Field.
Insight: Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits (2 HR) in six innings (4 K, 3 BB). He has allowed five homers in his two worst starts (9.00 ERA in 12 IP) and zero in the other three (1.42 ERA in 19 IP).

Hot3/14/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Matt Cain has made two starts this spring, pitching eight innings and yielding just one hit and striking out nine batters.
Insight: Could this be the return of the Giants ace? After going 8-10 last season with a 4.00 ERA and 1.16 WHIP this spring's ealy work is indicating a big season. We hope so. Keep watching and if this trend continues he could be a bargain on Draft Day.

Hot9/18/2013 10:56:00 PM
Description: Matt Cain held the Mets to one run in seven innings Wednesday in a start at Citi Field.
Insight: The Giants ace has been terrific since coming off the DL earlier this month (1.29 ERA in 21 innings). Despite his recent success, it's mostly been a disappointing year for Cain. His 4.06 ERA is his highest since 2006.
