Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
When the top-two draft picks in all of fantasy, Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson don't run for 100 yards, you know its going to be a low scoring week. And with just one player scoring 30-or-more fantasy points, it obviously was.
Week 8 was a tough one for quarterback forecasting. What with six teams on byes and injuries to a few more starters, many fantasy owners were left with writing some strange names into their lineup.
Sure, Matthew Stafford facing one of the worst pass defenses in the league, made him a logical Week 8 start at quarterback, but what "clairvoyant" fantasy owner was smart enough to start Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard?
If that was you, I'm looking for some investment advice.
Garrard was just one of three quarterbacks, who rewarded owners who put them into their lineup. The Jacksonville quarterback led all signalcallers in the seven early contests with 28 fantasy points. He threw four touchdowns, wasn't intercepted, and ran in a fifth one as his Jaguars beat up on the Dallas Cowboys 35-17. He was 17-for-21 for 260 yards.
Stafford made a triumphant return to the Lions lineup, his first appearance since Week 1 and while only throwing for 212 yards, manufactured four touchdown passes and 23 fantasy points. You shouldn't be too excited however, because his performance was against the 31st-ranked pass defense.
Jon Kitna, the Cowboys replacement for injured Tony Romo, did an accurate job in the role. He threw for 379 yards and a touchdown, but also tossed four interceptions, which made his performance very much like Romo, who had three games with at least two interceptions this season.
Kyle Orton also cracked the 300-yard mark, but could only get into the endzone one time and finished with just 12 fantasy points.
There were three running backs who ran for 100 yards in the early session - Jamaal Charles, Frank Gore and Maurice Jones-Drew.
On the other hand, Steven Jackson, Knowshon Moreno and Jonathan Stewart were expected to do big things today and they all came up short.
Jackson was facing the 24th-ranked Carolina Panthers run defense, but finished with 23 carries for 59 yards. Moreno carried the ball just 11 times for 40 yards and Stewart, with DeAngelo Williams inactive, could only muster 30 yards on 14 carries.
The receivers were the "stars" today, although no one put up Kenny Britt-like numbers (he scored 53 fantasy points last week).
Calvin Johnson celebrated the return of his No.1 quarterback (Stafford) by catching nine balls for 101 yards and three touchdowns worth a league-high 34 fantasy points. Brandon Lloyd enjoyed his trip to London with a seven-catch, 169-yard, one touchdown day (28 points) and Mike Sims-Walker put up his best performance of the season with an eight-catch, 153-yard, one touchdowns day worth 27 fantasy points.
In the four o'clock games, the fantasy numbers picked up a bit, but nothing like in previous weeks. Philip Rivers posted a 300-yard day, what else is new, as did Jason Campbell. Darren McFadden, LeGarrette Blount and BenJarvis Green- Ellis ran for 100+ yards and seven receivers cracked the "century mark," headed by Steve Breaston. The list included players like; Darrius Heyward-Bey, Brandon Tate, and Nate Washington, rarely started by fantasy owners in 2010.
