Should you be considering dropping Roddy White a bit on your draft board?
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Atlanta wideout Roddy White has become a stud wide receiver over the past two seasons and so far this summer is holding out for new larger contract. He probably deserves it, but that's not our decision, it's the Falcons' management. All we can do is sit and wait until he reports to training camp.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the two sides will get together anytime soon. White is practicing in his old stomping grounds at UAB.
So in the meantime, should you be considering dropping White a bit on your draft board?
I always get concerned when a player misses more than one week of two-a-day practices and there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to tell you that it will effect his fantasy value.
Remember all the way back to last year when Green Bay running back Ryan Grant held out and then suffered hamstring injuries throughout preseason. He didn't crack the 100-yards mark until Week 7, the same week he scored his first touchdown of the season. Over the final seven weeks he hit the 100-yard bonus three times.
Chad Ochocinco also was coming off surgery in 2008 and missed most of the hard work in training camp. He made it to camp, but mainly did conditioning and rehab drills. Then when he finally started to practice a left shoulder sprain sidelined him. The result was the slowest start of his career (he didn't break the 50-yard mark until Week 5) and had the worst season since his rookie year in 2001 (53-540-4).
Even the great Peyton Manning is not immune to struggling without getting in his preseason work. Following off-season surgery, Manning didn't get much practice in until late in camp and it effected the beginning of the regular season. He had just one 300-yard effort in the first 10 weeks. Of course he rebounded nicely and was great during fantasy playoff time (Weeks 14-16) throwing for 959 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions.
In 2007, Larry Johnson held out until late in training camp and the first three weeks of the season carried the ball for just 43, 55 and 42 yards after posting 1,789 yards and 17 touchdowns the previous year. He played just eight games that season before a season-ending leg injury.
For White, who has a second-year quarterback and a new starting tight end to work alongside (Tony Gonzalez), getting to camp should be important. If this holdout lasts too long, I will have to drop him a few slots.
