Through 32 games Devin Harris is scoring at a 22.9 ppg clip.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
When the Dallas Mavericks traded away Devin Harris in February of 2008 for veteran point guard Jason Kidd (actually a seven-player deal), they thought they were getting themselves a shot at the title and trading away potential.
Little did they know at the time, but they're championship hopes have faded and Harris' potential has become a actuality.
In his fifth season in the NBA, Harris has become a fantasy dream. He has increased his scoring average in every season, from 5.7 ppg in his rookie year, to 14.8 ppg in his first full season with the New Jersey Nets and now through 32 games he is scoring at a 22.9 ppg clip - good enough for ninth-best in the NBA. Add to the scoring, 6.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals and a solid .834 FT percentage you have your "standard" NBA fantasy star.
Meanwhile the man he was traded for, Kidd, has seen his scoring average dip from 10.8 ppg last season to 8.7 this year, his assist-per-game drop from 10.1 to 8.3 and his rebounds-per-game from 7.5 to 6.4.
Actually, it was the second time Harris was traded. Technically he was drafted by the Washington Wizards who immediately packaged him with guard Jerry Stackhouse and forward Christian Laettner in exchange for Antawn Jamison.
Harris has scored more points this season than Chris Paul, the No.1 ADP (average draft position), has more assists than an experienced guard like Atlanta's Mike Bibby and owns six double-doubles so far this season. He also has New Jersey at the .500 level (19-19) and in second place in the Eastern Division's Atlantic Conference. That's a vast improvement from the 34-48 record of 2007-08.
Harris' preseason ADP of 64.8 (seventh-round selection) seems like it was well off the mark as he is currently ranked 32nd overall. A nice bargain and one which could get even better over the remainder of this NBA season.
