Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
You know it was bad week for many fantasy owners when three of last year's All-Star game pitchers, including the National League starter, "made" the Who's Not portion of today's article.
Chris Carpenter, St. Louis - The "real" Carpenter has finally arrived after an "imposter" posted a 1-7 record through his first 15 starts. In Carpenter's last two starts he's gone 2-0 with just two earned runs in 16 innings and 12 strikeouts. That's what we expected of him when we drafted him back in March.
Vance Worley, Philadelphia - It's possible that the Phillies have found another "ace" to replace injured Roy Oswalt. Worley has made eight starts in 2011 and gone 4-1 with an ERA of 2.20 and a WHIP of 1.224. He's yielded one run-or-less in his last four starts and has risen to 10th among all National League starters in the Sports Network's SSRD360 rating system. He's only owned in about 15% of all leagues and should be your first waiver claim if you need a starter.
Gio Gonzalez, Oakland - Gonzalez is becoming the pitcher that scouts thought he could become. He's lowered his ERA in each season since arriving in the majors in 2008 and is currently at a miniscule 2.31 level. Over his last four starts, Gonzalez is 3-0 giving up just four earned runs in 28 innings and striking out 34 batters. With Trevor Cahill's game falling apart, it's Gonzalez who is the "ace " of the A's pitching staff.
Trevor Cahill, Oakland - After starting the season 6-0 and looking like one of the top pitchers in the American League, Cahill has "lost it." In his last 10 starts, he's earned just two wins against six losses, posted a lofty 4.65 ERA and a horrible 1.567 WHIP. Though we have seen his ownership level drop to 87% as a few owners have given up on him, I would sit him on the bench, but not let him go. His season-long numbers are still good enough to trade and get a solid player in return (a testament to his great start), if you insist on getting him off your roster.
Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado - The most disappointing pitcher in all of fantasy baseball has to be Jimenez, who was a fourth-round draft choice in the preseason off a great 2010 season (19-8, 2.88 ERA, 1.155 WHIP). That pitcher hasn't shown up in 2011 and Jimenez is struggling along with a 3-8 record, an ERA of 4.39 and a WHIP of 1.349. Here's the good news. He has won two of his last three starts and lowered his ERA from 5.86 at the end of May to its current level. Although he has yielded three runs or more in eight of 15 starts this season, there is hope because he's has given up exactly two runs in four of his last five outings. Your patience is about to be rewarded.
Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee - Gallardo is either very, very good, or horrible. And lately it's been the latter. He sandwiched a nice start with two ugly outings against Boston and Minnesota. The result was two losses and a rise in his ERA to near the four runs-a-game level. That's way too much for a guy with his assortment of pitches. If you can live with the inconsistency, then keep throwing him out there every fifth day or try to trade him for a more solid contributor.
