In Philadelphia, Cliff Lee will likely see his ERA suffer because it's a hitters ballpark.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
If you own the rights to Cliff Lee, this has been a very good week. Your "ace" just went from a bottom-of-the-standings team (Cleveland Indians, 42-60) to a first-place club who's specialty is scoring runs (Philadelphia Phillies, 58-41).
While in Cleveland, Lee made 22 starts, going 7-9. On the surface it looks like he wasn't pitching well, particularly when compared to last year's 22-win Cy Young Award season, but when you look at his 3.14 ERA and 1.30 WHIP you see a different story. He's headed to Philadelphia where the Phillies have scored 5.47 runs-a-game despite a struggling Jimmy Rollins - the team's "igniter."
In Philadelphia, Lee will likely see his ERA suffer because it's a hitters ballpark, but he'll more than make up for that with additional wins.
On the other hand, if George Sherrill was a big part of your bullpen, it will almost seem as if he just got injured and is out for the season. That's because his move from a closing role in Baltimore to a set-up role in Los Angeles will drastically drop his fantasy value.
Sherrill already earned 20 saves and was likely to beat last year's personal high of 31 saves. But now, he'll be assigned the set-up role for Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton. He's still got a one-strikeout-per-inning average and a low ERA (2.40) and WHIP (1.13), but will that be enough to keep him on your roster?
With Lee gone, the Indians have brought up talented Fausto Carmona. When we last saw him, he was 2-6 with a 7.42 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP. But he was 3-3 in the minors with a 3.55 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. And we know he's got the same arm as he had in 2007 when he was a stunning 19-7 with a 3.06 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He certainly is worth watching and possibly a sleeper the rest of the way.
There's not been much movement on the offensive side of the ball as of Wednesday.
This year's biggest prize, Matt Holliday, was already sent from Oakland to St. Louis last week. The outfielder has hit .500 (11-for-22) for the past six games.
Freddy Sanchez went from a light-hitting Pittsburgh Pirates lineup to a light- hitting San Francisco Giants lineup. Despite being a former NL batting champion, Sanchez doesn't have a lot of fantasy value due to his low OPS - 0.776. His double play mate, Jack Wilson was also sent packing, to Seattle, but he too doesn't have much fantasy value as he is hitting only .267 with four home runs, 31 RBIs, just two steals and an OPS of 0.691.
There is still a day and a half to go before the deadline, so let's see if Roy Halladay or a big-time hitter like Victor Martinez gets moved.
