NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Calgary
(Wednesday, April 9th)
Final Score: Calgary 4, Los Angeles 3 (SO)
Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Monahan supplied the game winner in the fourth round of the shootout, as the Calgary Flames secured a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at the Saddledome.
After the first three shooters came up empty, Marian Gaborik lit the lamp with a wicked wrister over Karri Ramo's glove, but Jiri Hudler answered with a heavy slapper at the other end to extend the shootout.
Ramo then turned away Jeff Carter before Monahan skated in and lifted a shot over Quick's blocker to put the Flames on top. Mike Richards had a chance to extend the shootout, but his shot missed wide to give Calgary the win.
T.J. Galiardi tallied a goal and an assist, while Matt Stajan and Monahan each added a regulation marker for the Flames, who have won four straight games. Ramo registered 41 saves in the victory.
"His progression has been unbelievable and right now he's making a name for himself as a number one (goaltender)," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said of Ramo.
Anze Kopitar, Jarret Stoll and Dwight King each scored once for the Kings, who are locked into the third spot in the Pacific Division, despite dropping their third straight game. LA will face the rival Sharks in the first round.
"We hung there, got some goals and got a point," LA head coach Darryl Sutter said.
Quick made just 15 saves in the setback.
Stajan's tally 15:28 into the second staked Calgary to a 3-0 lead, but the Kings scored twice in a 24-second span shortly after to pull within one.
Stoll tipped in Slava Voynov's blast from the right point at 16:09 and on the ensuing shift, Kopitar picked up the puck on the low right side, skated around the net and worked into the slot before backhanding the puck past Ramo to make it 3-2 at 16:33.
King brought the Kings even 12:18 into the third when he redirected Jake Muzzin's left point shot past Ramo for a 3-3 deadlock.
LA outshot the Flames 5-0 in overtime, but was unable to get anything past Ramo to force a shootout.
Early on, Galiardi gave Calgary 1-0 lead just under 12 minutes into the game when he buried a backhander from the slot off a Mike Cammalleri feed.
Monahan made it 2-0 with his 21st of the season four minutes into the second.
The Kings improved to 2-0-1 on their current four-game road trip, which wraps up Thursday in Edmonton ... Calgary has won four straight for the first time since a five-game run from Jan. 22-Feb. 1 ... Voynov finished with two assists.
