Final Score: Cleveland 5, Colorado 2
Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Kluber piled up 12 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings and the Cleveland Indians topped the Colorado Rockies, 5-2, to snap a four-game skid.
Kluber (6-3), who surrendered five hits and a pair of runs, has 60 strikeouts this month. That's the most for the month of May since Curt Schilling had 62 in 2002 for Arizona. Kluber also became the fifth Cleveland pitcher since 1914 to have 60 Ks in any month.
Kluber moved to 4-0 over his last six starts and hasn't lost since April 29 in Anaheim.
"He threw a hard cutter, hard slider, big curve," Rockies third baseman Charlie Culberson said of Kluber. "He's a good pitcher, one of the better ones I've seen."
Asdrubal Cabrera slugged a two-run homer during a four-run fifth inning. Lonnie Chisenhall also knocked in two runs for the Indians, while Michael Brantley extended his hitting streak to 15 games and scored twice.
Juan Nicasio (5-3) gave up nine hits and five runs over 4 2/3 frames for the Rockies, who lost for the sixth time in eight contests.
Carlos Gonzalez clubbed a two-run homer to right-center with Corey Dickerson aboard in the fourth inning to give Colorado a 2-1 edge.
Charlie Blackmon made a spectacular catch against the wall in center to rob Jesus Aguilar of a hit in the bottom of the fifth, just after David Murphy doubled.
Murphy went to third on the play and then scored on Michael Bourn's single to center. Brantley, who then doubled to right-center, moved his hitting streak at Progressive Field to 19 games, the most in the stadium's history.
Two batters later, Chisenhall doubled to left for a three-run lead.
"We had a lot of big hits tonight in timely situations," Kluber said.
Chisenhall singled in Brantley in the first inning.
Walt Weiss was ejected for the first time in his 216 games as Rockies manager following a strikeout by Michael Cuddyer to end the top of the sixth inning ... Weiss argued with home plate umpire John Tumpane before being ejected ... Kluber is 5-0 in his career in interleague play ... Brantley has the longest home hitting streak for the Indians since 1984 when Julio Franco hit safely in 19 straight at Cleveland Stadium from June 8-July 22 ... Cody Allen fanned two batters in the ninth to earn his second save.
