National League Preview from The Sports Network
Sunday, July 6 (All times Eastern)
Milwaukee Brewers (52-36) at Cincinnati Reds (44-42), 1:10 p.m.
Probable Starting Pitchers: Milwaukee - Yovani Gallardo (5-5, 3.51) Cincinnati - Mat Latos (1-1, 2.45)
(SportsNetwork.com) - Mat Latos certainly did his part in trying to get the Cincinnati Reds a win in his last start. The Reds, though, have been struggling to score runs in the last week.
Cincinnati has been blanked in three of its last five contests. Jay Bruce is mired in a career-worst 0-for-23 slump for the Reds, who have dropped four of the last five after winning eight of the previous nine.
As for Latos, today's starter, he has lasted seven innings in each of his last two starts and is coming off a 1-0 loss at San Diego Monday. Latos gave up just one hit, the total for the Padres in the entire game.
Over his career, Latos has compiled a 2-4 with a 3.28 ERA in nine starts against the Brewers. His first start this season came at Miller Park when he threw six shutout innings in a game against Yovani Gallardo, today's starter for the Brewers. Both pitchers didn't get a decision in that contest, won 4-2 by Milwaukee.
Gallardo is 7-7 with a 4.26 ERA in 22 career starts against the Reds. He was 2-0 over a four-start stretch recently until losing 10-4 to the Rockies a week ago. In that game, Gallardo gave up 10 hits and eight runs -- five earned -- in five innings.
Yesterday, Matt Garza tossed his first shutout of the season to lead the Brewers to a 1-0 win. Garza (6-5) gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out nine for the Brewers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Aramis Ramirez drove in the only run of the game.
Homer Bailey (8-5) took the tough-luck loss as he gave up just one run on seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts over eight innings for the Reds.
Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun left the game in the second inning with lower back spasms and is questionable for today's contest.
The Reds lead the season series, 6-3.
