CFL Game Summary - Saskatchewan at Calgary

(Saturday, October 1st)

Final Score: Calgary 40, Saskatchewan 3

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jon Cornish scored twice on the ground as Calgary routed Saskatchewan, 40-3.

Cornish finished the game with 149 yards on 13 carries while Henry Burris completed 15-of-19 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Stampeders (8-5), who snapped a two-game slide.

"I thought we played well in all three phases," said Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel. "They hung in there all four quarters playing hard. It was important to win the football game and the way we played the game is something the coaching staff was requesting and they put the effort of preparing and they played extremely well with a lot of emotion."

Darian Durant went 12-for-21 with 128 yards while Wes Cates had 34 yards on eight carries for the Roughriders (4-9), who have dropped their past two contests.

"We just couldn't get nothing going," said Saskatchewan cornerback Tristan Jackson. "Calgary just had a great defensive scheme. Their running back did a great job and we couldn't tackle him. It just wasn't our night."

A single from Rene Paredes and a two-yard touchdown run from Cornish gave Calgary an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Saskatchewan got its only points of the game on a 43-yard field goal from Chris Milo early into the second.

Calgary followed with a single and Drew Tate later punched the ball into the end zone on a two-yard score. Near the end of the second quarter, Charleston Hughes returned a fumble 71 yards as the Stampeders took a 23-3 lead into the break.

The Roughriders kept it coming in the third quarter on a five-yard TD catch from Romby Bryant and Cornish's 35-yard run into the end zone for a 37-3 lead.

Paredes connected on a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.
