San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Billy Volek's touchdown pass to Mike Tolbert
with 35 seconds to play lifted San Diego over Washington, 23-20, at Qualcomm
Volek finished 19-of-30 for 216 yards for the Chargers (13-3), who ended the
season with their 11th consecutive victory.
Malcom Floyd led all receivers with nine receptions for 140 yards while
Antonio Gates also recorded a TD catch for San Diego, which locked up the
second seed in the AFC.
"It's great (to win), and it shows how much depth we have at every position,"
Floyd said. "I wasn't prepared to go after the half, but I was just in there
laying it on the line every play. I was just trying to win."
Philip Rivers played most of the first half and was 9-of-15 for 99 yards and
Jason Campbell went 28-of-42 for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the
Redskins (4-12), who finished the year dropping six of seven and posted their
worst record since a 3-13 mark in 1994.
"There's a lot of things I'm sure out there as far as (my coaching status).
There already has been," Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said of his future with
the club. "I get that, but I'm working on our team meeting, our offseason
schedule and until I'm told (otherwise), I'm getting ready."
Mike Sellers and Todd Yoder each recorded a catch for a score and Malcolm
Kelly had five catches for 109 yards in a losing cause.
Graham Gano's 25-yard make capped a 69-yard, 14-play drive which consumed over
7 1/2 minutes and gave the Redskins a 20-16 edge with 4:33 left in regulation,
but the home team was not to be denied.
The Chargers forged ahead with 35 seconds to play, as Volek hit Tolbert for a
two-yard touchdown, a score which capped a 12-play, 58-yard march.
Craig Davis appeared to have scored the go-ahead touchdown with an 11-yard
reception on 2nd-and-4 from the Redskins' 12, but replay determined he did not
get the ball over the pylon before heading out of bounds. After Michael
Bennett was dropped for a loss on first down, Volek found Tolbert to put the
Campbell threw four straight incompletions before Volek knelt to run out the
Nate Kaeding's 47-yard field goal capped San Diego's opening drive, then a 12-
yard touchdown connection from Rivers to Gates on the Chargers' following
series made it 10-0.
A 24-yard make by Kaeding early in the second quarter provided a 13-point edge
for the home team, then Yoder's two-yard TD catch on Washington's ensuing
drive cut the visitors' deficit to 13-7.
An 84-yard pass to Kelly set up a three-yard score to Sellers with 39 seconds
left in the half to put the Redskins ahead by a point at the break.
Gano's 22-yard field goal gave Washington a 17-13 edge early in the third
quarter, and Kaeding countered for San Diego with a 45-yarder early in the
fourth for a one-point contest.
San Diego has won three in a row over Washington dating back to 2001...The
Chargers racked up 364 yards of total offense and the Redskins posted 339.
