NFL Game Summary - Detroit at Green Bay
(Sunday, October 18th)
Final Score: Green Bay 26, Detroit 0
Green Bay, WI (Sports Network) - Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdowns as the
Green Bay Packers continued their home field dominance of the Detroit Lions
with a 26-0 rout at Lambeau Field.
The win is Green Bay's 18th straight home victory against the Lions, which
includes 15 straight games at Lambeau Field. Detroit's last win on the road in
the series came in 1991.
Rodgers went 29-for-37 with 358 yards and an interception for the Packers
(3-2), who were coming off their bye week after losing to Brett Favre and the
Minnesota Vikings. Mason Crosby connected on all four of his field goal
attempts.
James Jones and John Kuhn each caught a touchdown while Ryan Grant had 24
carries for 90 yards in the win for Green Bay, which shut out Detroit for
the first time since November 17, 1946.
"I felt the game today started with defense," said Packers coach Mike
McCarthy. "I thought they played at a very high level by holding Detroit to no
points. Home wins and individual wins are very important."
Donald Driver finished the game with seven catches for 107 yards. His first
catch of the game in the first quarter, a short five-yard grab, gave him 596
for his career to set a Green Bay receiving record. The previous record of 595
catches in a Green Bay uniform was held by Sterling Sharpe.
"It feels good," said Driver about the record. "I'm happy and more excited
than anything else. It's a long time coming. You never expect it to happen,
but it couldn't have come at a better place, at home in front of your home
crowd."
Daunte Culpepper, making his second start under center in place of an injured
Matthew Stafford, went just 6-for-14 for 48 yards and a pick for the Lions
(1-5), who have dropped 15 straight road games. Culpepper left the game in the
third quarter with a right hamstring injury, while Drew Stanton entered and
went 5-for-11 with 57 yards and two interceptions
"It is very disappointing, frustrating and embarrassing to me," said
Culpepper. "We need to figure out a way to move down the field and put points
on the board. It is as simple as that."
Kevin Smith had 15 carries for 61 yards while Dennis Northcutt caught five
passes for 40 yards in the loss for Detroit, which has dropped its past three
games after snapping a 19-game losing streak.
"When something like this happens, you can't sugarcoat it," said Detroit coach
Jim Schwartz. "You can't blame it on one side of the ball. You have to move on
and find a way to make sure it doesn't happen again. That is going to be our
objective over the next couple of weeks."
The Packers started the game with the ball and Jordy Nelson took the kickoff
into the end zone, but a holding call negated the score and the team started
with the ball at its own 20. On 3rd-and-7, Detroit brought the rush, but
Rodgers threw a pass over the middle and Greg Jennings made a one-handed catch
that went for 26 yards. Three plays later, Rodgers hit Jones, who was wide
open, at the right sideline and he took it into the end zone on a 47-yard
score.
On the third play of Detroit's next touch, Culpepper was rushed and tried to
dump the ball off, but Cullen Jenkins grabbed the ball for his first career
interception. Six plays later, fullback Kuhn got into the end zone on a one-
yard catch, making it a 14-0 game with 7:20 left in the first.
Later in the first, Detroit drove into Green Bay territory and opted to go for
it on 4th-and-1 at the 21, but Smith was smothered on a run to the right and
the Packers got the ball back.
After an exchange of punts, the Packers made it a 17-0 game on Crosby's 46-
yard field goal with 7:22 to play in the first half. The scored was set up
by a 17-yard catch by Jennings.
Detroit was again forced to punt on its next touch and the Packers got a 45-
yard return by Tramon Williams, which helped set up a 28-yard field goal by
Crosby with 1:56 left.
A 31-yard field goal from Crosby gave the Packers a 23-0 lead at the break.
On its first touch of the third quarter, Green Bay drove down the field and
got into the red zone, but had to turn to Crosby again, this time for a 26-
yard boot for a 26-0 lead with 7:43 to play in the third frame.
Stanton, who took over for Culpepper in the previous series, was picked off by
Al Harris on the first play of the Lions' next drive. Green Bay drove to the
Detroit three-yard line, but Rodgers fumbled as he was sacked and Detroit took
over.
In the middle of the fourth quarter the Lions got into the red zone, but
Stanton was picked off in the end zone by Atari Bigby and Green Bay killed the
rest of the clock.
