Description: Tigers reliever Octavio Dotel has been diagnosed with elbow inflammation. SOURCE: Jason Beck,
Insight: Dotel imploded Friday night in Anaheim (4 H, 5 ER in 2/3 of an inning) and now we might know the reason why. The 39-year-old hasn't been used in any save situations this season so fantasy owners don't need to keep tabs on him.
3/2/2011 4:37:00 PM
Description: Octavio Dotel gave up three runs in an inning of work today.
Insight: He is pitching his way out of the closer job in Toronto, which he was a long shot to win in the first place. It is likely down to Frank Francisco is he is healthy and Jon Rauch if he isn't.

Description: Octavio Dotel has signed with Toronto, pending a physical. He will get $2.5 million next year with a $750,000 buyout or a $3.5 million 2012 option. SOURCE: ENRIQUE ROJAS
Insight: He is the favorite to close for Toronto even though Jason Frasor could get the job if Dotel looks bad in spring training. He should be drafted as a late round closer in mixed leagues.
12/27/2010 9:10:00 AM
Description: Octavio Dotel is close to signing a one-year deal worth about $3.2 million with Toronto. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: He would be their leading candidate to close even though Jason Frasor gives them a viable option if Dotel struggles in spring training. He is one of the weaker closer options but saves from him count as much as saves from anyone else.
12/23/2010 1:22:00 PM
Description: Octavio Dotel has drawn interest from Toronto, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay so far. SOURCE: FOXSPORTS
Insight: He will likely avoid Pittsburgh and look for a good shot at closing with another team. Tampa Bay and Toronto both present a decent chance at getting saves and pitching on a respectable club.
8/19/2010 6:23:00 AM
Description: Octavio Dotel took the loss last night after walking three batters and giving up a run in the 10th inning of a tie game.
Insight: Meanwhile, Jonathan Broxton threw his third scoreless inning since being pulled from the closer role. Expect Broxton to be closing again very soon.

Description: L.A. has traded James McDonald and minor leaguer Andrew Lambo to Pittsburgh for Octavio Dotel. SOURCE: USA TODAY
Insight: A good move for both sides. Dotel gives the Dodgers another hard thrower in the bullpen. They could have used a lefty more but he is still an asset. The Pirates add McDonald, who could develop into a serviceable starter. He isn't going to change their franchise but they weren't going to get anything more than that for Dotel. Dotel can be cut in mixed leagues. Immediate word is that the Pirates are going to split saves between Evan Meek and Joel Hanrahan.
7/28/2010 12:34:00 AM
Description: Dotel picked up his 21st save of the season against Colorado on Tuesday night.
Insight: Dotel is 21-for-26 in save opportunities along with a 4.38 ERA this season. He is a candidate to be traded, but would almost certainly not be closing games if he is dealt. (

Description: Other teams are convinced that the Pirates are going to move closer Octavio Dotel in a trade. SOURCE: Buster Olney via Twitter
Insight: If you need saves grab Joel Hanrahan now.
7/22/2010 4:25:00 PM
Description:'s Buster Olney reports that other teams are convinced the Pirates will trade Dotel and install Joel Hanrahan as their closer.
Insight: If Dotel is dealt, Evan Meek could also be in the mix for saves in Pittsburgh. Hanrahan could worth adding in NL-only leagues immediately. (
7/21/2010 12:11:00 AM
Description: Dotel picked up his 20th save of the season against Milwaukee on Tuesday night.
Insight: Dotel has allowed just eight runs since May 1, and could easily be traded to a contender before the end of the month. A move out of Pittsburgh would likely mean a move into a setup role for him, which obviously hurts his fantasy value. (
7/12/2010 12:46:00 PM
Description: Dotel blew his fifth save of the season against Milwaukee on Sunday.
Insight: Dotel has 19 saves so far this season, but has blown his last two save chances and has a 4.89 ERA on the season. Pittsburgh may look to trade him very soon if they plan to deal him. (
7/8/2010 11:41:00 AM
Description: The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports Pirates' president Frank Coonelly said Dotel is "not on the trading block."
Insight: This is hard to believe, since Dotel is likely to be targeted by contending teams in need of a bullpen arm. If and when he is dealt, Evan Meek or Joel Hanrahan would likely move into the closer role for the Pirates. (
7/6/2010 10:42:00 AM
Description: Dotel has converted his last seven save opportunities.
Insight: Dotel has not allowed an earned run since June 15 after a tough start to the season, and is enhancing his potential trade value with his recent performance. (
7/5/2010 3:57:00 AM
Description: Dotel got his 19th save of the season against Philadelphia on Sunday.

7/2/2010 3:39:00 PM
Description: Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse reports the Marlins have inquired about Dotel.
Insight: Dotel is definitely a candidate to be traded before July is over. A move out of Pittsburgh would likely mean a move into a setup role, which would hurt his fantasy value. (
7/1/2010 11:38:00 PM
Description: Dotel got his 17th save of the season on Thursday against the Phillies.
Insight: Dotel is 17-for-20 in save opportunities along with a 4.55 ERA this season. (
