American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Tampa Bay

(Sunday, August 3)

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 7, Tampa Bay 5

St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Trout had three hits and two RBI and Jered Weaver worked six innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 7-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

The Angels scored five runs in the first inning off Jake Odorizzi and won two out of three in the series.

"I thought on the offensive side even past the first inning we did a good job," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Did well with runners in scoring position."

Weaver (12-6) gave up two runs on six hits and four walks and improved to 5-0 in his last nine starts. He struck out three.

James Loney had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Rays, who have lost three of their last four.

Odorizzi (7-9) had won three straight starts coming in, allowing just five earned runs and striking out 20 in 19 1/3 innings. But he threw 46 pitches in the Angels' five-run first and lasted just three innings, giving up eight hits and three walks.

"You're gonna have days like this and stuff like this happens and you just have to work through it," Odorizzi said.

The Angels sent nine players to the plate in the first. It started with a leadoff walk by Kole Calhoun, who scored on Trout's double to the left-center field wall. Josh Hamilton and Howie Kendrick stroked RBI singles in the inning, Hamilton scored on David Freese's sacrifice fly and Efren Navarro's double brought in Aybar.

Loney's leadoff double in the second was Tampa Bay's lone hit off Weaver through three innings.

Weaver spent an extra 19 minutes on the bench between the third and fourth innings when lights inside Tropicana Field went out during a nearby storm, causing a delay.

In the fourth, he gave up consecutive hits to Loney, Yunel Escobar and Logan Forsythe and a sacrifice fly to Jose Molina that got the Rays on the board.

Tampa Bay scored its second run in the fifth inning after Evan Longoria moved two runners up with his first career sacrifice bunt and Loney hit a sac fly.

The Angels got it back in the sixth after Navarro hit a leadoff single, stole second base and scored on Trout's single. In the seventh, Hamilton led off with a double and scored on Freese's sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.

With Weaver off the mound, the Rays sent nine men to the plate in the seventh and scored three runs on Loney's single, a Kevin Jepsen wild pitch and Joe Smith's bases-loaded walk to Cole Figueroa, pulling within 7-5.

Huston Street pitched the ninth inning for his 30th save of the season and sixth for the Angels.

Game Notes

Up next for the Angels is the four-game Freeway Series against the Dodgers. The first two games are at Dodger Stadium on Monday and Tuesday. The last two are in Anaheim on Wednesday and Thursday ... The Rays are in Oakland on Monday to begin a 10-game road trip ... The Angels placed left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after he sprained his left ankle during Saturday's game. They recalled right-handed relievers Fernando Salas from Triple-A Salt Lake and Cam Bedrosian from Double-A Arkansas and optioned left-hander Michael Roth to Arkansas. Bedrosian is the son of 1987 NL Cy Young Award winner Steve Bedrosian.
