National League Game Summary - St. Louis at Colorado
(Monday, September 16th)
Final Score: Colorado 6, St. Louis 2
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to down the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2, in the opener of a four-game set at Coors Field.
With runners on the corners and one out, Wilin Rosario laced a single to left field to score Troy Tulowitzki. After Josh Rutledge reached on a fielder's choice, Charlie Blackmon doubled to left field to score Tyler Chatwood, chasing Trevor Rosenthal (2-4) from the game.
Ryan Wheeler welcomed John Axford with a two-run single to left to make it 6-2.
Despite blowing a one-run lead in the eighth, Chad Bettis (1-3) picked up the win. Starter Collin McHugh allowed just one run on four hits over five innings.
"I think our guys have done a great job down the stretch. We would love to have won more games, but it is certainly not for a lack of effort. These guys are showing up well, and they have all year," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.
St. Louis starter Lance Lynn worked 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball, allowing just six hits and one walk while fanning four.
The Cardinals remain tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates atop the NL Central standings. The Pirates fell to the San Diego Padres earlier on Monday.
"We're away, we just need to win games. If we win games we'll end up where were supposed to be," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.
Tulowitzki doubled home Corey Dickerson in the first inning to give Colorado an early 1-0 lead.
The Cards tied the game in the fifth. Matt Adams opened the frame with a double then scored on David Freese's single to center.
Blackmon singled home Rosario in the seventh to put the Rockies on top 2-1.
St. Louis, however, tied the game in the eighth as Matt Carpenter doubled home pinch-runner Pete Kozma.
Colorado went 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position ... Carpenter leads the majors with 51 doubles this season ... St. Louis went 2-for-5 with RISP ... Carpenter extended his hitting streak to eight games.
