Cubs activate Valbuena, Sweeney among roster moves
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs activated infielder Luis Valbuena from the 15-day disabled list and outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the 60-day disabled list Sunday as major league rosters expand.
Valbuena, who was placed on the DL with a right oblique strain Aug. 4, was batting .225 with nine homers and 31 RBI through 89 games this season.
Sweeney, 28, returns after fracturing a rib when crashing into the outfield wall on June 29 in Seattle. Prior to the setback, he was batting .295 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 44 games with the Cubs. Sweeney played in five rehab games, including a 1-for-4 effort with Single-A Kane County on Saturday.
Chicago also recalled pitcher Alberto Cabrera from Triple-A Iowa and designated pitcher Eduardo Sanchez for assignment.
Cabrera had split the 2013 campaign with Double-A Tennessee and Iowa, going 10-6 with a 3.79 earned run average in 33 appearances, including 18 starts. The 24-year-old right-hander made his major league debut with the Cubs last August, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 25 relief appearances.
Sanchez, 24, went 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in four relief appearances with the Cubs this season. He was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on May 21.
