Report: Manuel out as Phillies manager

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies have scheduled a press conference for Friday afternoon and reports indicate that Charlie Manuel is out as manager.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that Manuel and the club will part ways. It was initially thought he might retire at the end of the season, but indications are that he is out immediately.

Manuel has been at the helm since 2005 and has been the most successful manager in Phillies history with a record of 780-636 in his nine-year tenure. He guided the franchise to five straight division titles from 2007 through 2011, as well as the club's second World Series championship after the 2008 campaign.

However, the Phillies are just 53-67 heading into Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and sit in fourth place of the National League East. They are headed for their first losing season since the 2002 team was 80-81. Last year's team finished 81-81.

Manuel, who also skippered the Cleveland Indians for 2 1/2 seasons from 2000 through July 12, 2002, recently picked up his 1,000th career managerial win. He owns a lifetime mark of 1,000-826.
