Marlins name Redmond manager

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Mike Redmond has returned to the Marlins franchise, but this time as the club's new manager.

The 41-year-old was signed to a three-year deal and takes over for Ozzie Guillen, who was fired on Oct. 23 after one season as skipper.

Redmond was signed by the Marlins as a free agent in 1992, and spent the first seven years of his major league career (1998-2004) with the south Florida club -- helping them win their second World Series title in 2003.

He will be formally introduced at a press conference on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Named manager of the year in the Midwest League in 2011 while guiding the Single-A Lansing Lugnuts to a 77-60 record and a berth in the league finals, Redmond kept up his winning ways for Single-A Dunedin last season, going 78-55 and leading the Blue Jays farm team to another postseason appearance.

Redmond, a catcher by trade, will be tasked with turning around a team which revamped its roster and christened a new field in downtown Miami, but finished last in the NL East with a disappointing 69-93 record.

A native of Seattle, Redmond played 13 seasons primarily as a reserve, hitting .287 with 13 home runs, 117 doubles and 243 RBI in 764 games with the Marlins, Twins and Indians.
