NCAA Game Summary - Chattanooga at Auburn
(Saturday, November 6th)
Final Score: (3) Auburn 62, Chattanooga 24
Auburn, AL (Sports Network) - Cam Newton's four first-quarter touchdowns helped third-ranked Auburn trample Chattanooga, 62-24, at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Newton ended the game with 317 passing yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 24 yards and a score for the Tigers (10-0), who took a break from the rigors of the SEC and will close the conference schedule with games against Georgia next week and Alabama on November 26.
Newton's outstanding performance came in the wake of eligibility allegations which spawned earlier this week. The quarterback connected with four different receivers, including Terrell Zachery seven times for 148 yards and one touchdown.
"I think he (Newton) had another great game," said Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. "He threw for over 300 yards (317). He was responsible for four touchdowns. He was just very Cameron-like if you will. He performed very well. I was very proud of him."
Chattanooga (5-4) got on the scoreboard on a 98-yard kickoff return by Brian Sutherland after Auburn went up 34-0 on a Newton 80-yard pass to Zachery.
"It was a great feeling, actually, to take one back this season," Sutherland said. "Whether it's against Auburn or any team in our conference, it is a cool thing to be able to do. I just saw how they were setting it up to pursue one way and I just brought it back the other way. Not too many people are going to catch me once I get into the open, so I was pretty confident about that part."
B.J. Coleman had a solid game as the Mocs' signal-caller, completing 20-of-39 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown.
Auburn struck 30 seconds into the game when Newton found wide receiver Darvin Adams for a 30-yard touchdown toss. The Tigers kept pressuring early, as Newton connected on a 20-yard TD pass to Emory Blake with 9:33 left in the opening quarter. Newton also added a one-yard touchdown run less than five minutes later.
The Tigers scored on every possession of the first quarter to take a 27-0 lead on another Adams 39-yard score from Newton. They put up 21 points in the second quarter to take a 48-14 lead into halftime.
The Mocs' offense put up 334 yards during the game and found the end zone with 1:19 left in the first half when quarterback Coleman lofted a seam pass to Garrett Hughes for a 23-yard touchdown.
Meanwhile, Auburn had scored three touchdowns in the second quarter on Zachery's 80-yard reception, a 49-yard run by Onterio McCalebb and a Michael Dyer 37-yard run. The Tigers finished with 628 total offensive yards.
Chattanooga's opened the second half with a Keon Williams one-yard run and then capped off their scoring with a Jeff Veres 37-yard field goal with 7:55 left in the game.
Auburn's two second-half scores came from Mario Fannin with a 13-yard run in the third quarter and a 42-yard run in the final frame.
Chattanooga came into the game with a 5-1 record during its last six games... Auburn leads the series 21-0... Newton left the game during the second half after Auburn had the game under control...Fannin ended with 96 yards on eight carries...Sutherland led Chattanooga's receiving corps with 97 yards on 10 receptions.
