(Saturday, November 12th)
Final Score: New Mexico State 48, Fresno State 45
Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - A 37-yard touchdown catch by Taveon Rogers with less than two minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the difference as the New Mexico State Aggies registered a 48-45 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs in a Western Athletic Conference showdown at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
NMSU (4-6, 2-3 WAC) entered the meeting having lost all 17 previous matchups in the all-time series against the Bulldogs (3-7, 2-3).
Rogers finished the night with 10 catches for 166 yards for the Aggies, while quarterback Matt Christian connected on 25-of-43 passes for 360 yards and a pair of TDs. On the ground it was Kenny Turner who posted 112 yards and three TDs on 27 attempts for the hosts as they snapped a three-game slide.
The Bulldogs were paced by Derek Carr who hit on 22-of-34 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns, yet the team still lost its third in a row and for the fifth time in the last six outings. Robbie Rouse accounted for 86 yards and two scores on 23 rushing attempts.
The teams traded scores through the first half, beginning with a 29-yard TD pass play between Christian and Turner for the Aggies less than three minutes into the first period.
With 4:30 remaining in the frame Rouse knotted the score at 7-7 on a five-yard TD run.
Early in the second quarter Turner struck again, this time on a one-yard TD run to give the lead back to NMSU at 14-7.
Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling booted a 20-yard field goal for the visitors, but on the ensuing kickoff Rogers raced 99 yards to the end zone to make the score 20-10 following a failed PAT.
Rouse capped a five-play, 66-yard drive with two minutes left in the half with a 20-yard TD reception, but closing out the period NMSU kicker Tyler Stampler connected on a 39-yard field goal to provide the Aggies with a 23-17 advantage.
Jalen Saunders delivered a 15-yard TD run and a 59-yard TD catch in a span of less than two minutes in the third quarter to give the lead to Fresno State at 31-23. Later in the period Saunders reeled in a 64-yard TD pass from Carr as well, but in between Turner hit the end zone on a 10-yard run for the Aggies. Saunders finished the meeting with seven catches for 174 yards.
Turner's six-yard scoring run with 3:50 to play in the third made the score 38-38. Stampler made good on a 25-yard field goal in the fourth to provide the Aggies with a 41-38 lead, but again that was short-lived as Rouse registered a two-yard TD run for the visitors before Rogers saved the day.
New Mexico State finished the night 11-of-17 on third down and generated an even 500 yards of total offense.
