NCAA Game Summary - California at Nevada

(Friday, September 17th)

Final Score: Nevada 52, California 31

Reno, NV (Sports Network) - Colin Kaepernick ran for three touchdowns and threw two more as the Nevada Wolf Pack thumped California, 52-31, at Mackay Stadium in a game that featured nearly 1,000 yards of offense.

Kaepernick led the offense with 148 yards on the ground and 181 through the air on 10-of-15 attempts. He made the completions count with two going for scores of 15 and 28 yards to Tray Session and Rishard Matthews, respectively.

Vai Taua ripped off a 54-yard touchdown run on his way to a 151-yard rushing performance for the Wolf Pack (3-0), who were actually outgained by Cal, 502-497.

Shane Vereen starred in the loss with 198 rushing yards and three scores -- including 59 and 50-yard TD runs.

Cal senior Kevin Riley was 23-of-37 passing for 277 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off three times. That included a pick returned 65 yards for a touchdown by Marlon Johnson.

Riley's top target was Marvin Jones, who reeled in 12 catches for 161 yards for California, which had outscored its opponents 104-10 over the first two games of the season.

This was the Golden Bears' (2-1) first-ever visit to Mackay Stadium, while Nevada logged only its second win in the last 25 meetings between the two schools. Cal still holds a commanding 22-2-1 lead in the all-time series.

Kaepernick scored on eight and one-yard rushes and hooked up with Session on a receiving touchdown in the first half, and Nevada gained a 24-14 lead at the break on Anthony Martinez's 30-yard field goal.

Vereen had both of Cal's first-half scores and opened the third-quarter scoring with a 50-yard dash to the end zone to pull the Bears within 24-21.

Riley was driving the Bears later in the quarter when Jackson's interception resulted in a 10-point Wolf Pack lead. It was quickly 38-24 on Kaepernick's second TD toss and Taua made it a rout with his 54-yard scamper to paydirt in the fourth.

Riley managed a late four-yard TD strike to Eric Stevens, but Kaepernick came right back with a 27-yard scoring run to cap the big win for Nevada.
