Boca Raton, FL (Sports Network) - Ryan Aplin threw for 244 yards and a
touchdown while running for four more scores to lead the Arkansas State Red
Wolves to a 39-21 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls in Sun Belt
Conference action at FAU Stadium.
Aplin completed 24-of-37 in the air for Arkansas State (7-2, 5-0 SBC), and
rushed for another 49 yards as well. Derek Lawson ran for 91 yards on 20
carries to pace the Red Wolves ground-attack, while Dwayne Frampton hauled in
10 passes for 87 yards. ASU has now won six straight games, the best streak
Alfred Morris ran for 163 yards on just 19 carries and scored two touchdowns
to lead the way for FAU (0-8, 0-5). Graham Wilbert completed 16-of-24 for just
147 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the defeat. The Owls
remain winless on the season, and have not notched a victory since a 24-23
decision over Louisiana on November 13, 2010.
The Red Wolves capped an eight-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 13-yard
scoring run from Aplin. A two-point conversion attempt on a rush by Neely
Sullivent converted as well, resulting in an 8-0 lead.
Aplin found the end zone again, this time with a one-yard plunge, late in the
frame to give ASU a 15-0 advantage.
FAU got on the board early in the second quarter following a 13-yard Morris
A 30-yard Brian Davis kick midway through the frame extended the Red Wolves
lead to 18-7, but a four-yard Morris scamper with 2:49 remaining in the
second quarter pulled the Owls to within 18-14 heading into the break.
The Owls took a 21-18 lead early in the third quarter as Wilbert completed an
18-yard toss to Derek Moise.
But the Red Wolves reclaimed the lead just minutes later with a seven-yard
completion from Aplin to Taylor Stockemer.
In the fourth quarter Aplin gave ASU a 32-21 lead with a three-yard run
early on, and added a one-yard touchdown rush midway through the quarter.
Arkansas State finished 429 yards of total offense, while FAU registered 281.
